Down for thin, up for thick.

Least that's the way I was taught.

Vertical down, 6013, and very fast since its 3/32" rod and burns really fast

At 80amps on 1/8" steel I'm surprised how flat this laid down.

    No undercut whatsoever.

Camera doesn't capture just how concave and flat the weld is inside the seam. It doesn't bulge and the image above gives it the illusion that it does.

Yup, we’ll do a 6010 down to fill a thin gap, then 7018 up in stringers, then vertical up weaves to cap it.

7018 was a pain for me to strike, maybey it was old, pretty much started with it to learn, can’t even tell you how many I got stuck to my bumper. Switched to 6011 and laughed at how much easier it was for me to start.

    Odd.

6010 is usually what one learns with at first, especially since it's dirty and doesn't lay down as easily when running stringers.

7018 makes everyone look like a pro when you pull a stringer.

    7024 even more.

If your 7018 did not come out of a Rod oven and was exposed to the atmosphere it sucks in moisture like starting a wet match.

It also loses all the Low Hydrogen properties if your not doing code work preheat it with the torch .

You might also note once you run about half the rod it dries out and runs much better. to the point of being to hot.

haha wet match is a great way to put it, I’ll try pre heating it next time. Definitely not doing any work that requires certain specs other than please stay connected in case of impact…I’m confident in the work I have done though I’ve had some decent guidance other than heating the rods

I bought an old Toaster oven at a Yard sale that worked great till I bought a real Rod oven.

I just wrapped about 20 to 30 rods in Aluminum foil I heated them while I was doing prep work

Thanks all for the vertical up/down tips the last few days. I wanted to post this pic of kids gloves. I’m most excited about giving these to my 11 yr old tomorrow - should fit perfect !!! Happy holidays!

While good for protection you lose all tactile feeling in the hands from the gloves being so thick.

    when your so young

Often times I get going on a project and forget to change out my dirty scratched up lenses on my welding hood. I know this is stupid and very much common sense but I sometimes just get going on something without thinking about it and wonder why my welds start to suffer a little aesthetically. Duh! If you can’t see your weld well then that might be the answer haha. Changed out the protective lens this morning and it’s crazy how much of a difference it is. For anyone who is learning or just trying to continue to get better, don’t forget to change these out whenever you’re starting to struggle to clearly see your puddle.

    Amen to that.

Just having switching hoods made a huge difference.
