COLD, WET DECEMBER DAY: A storm system moving through the Gulf of Mexico will keep Alabama’s weather cloudy and cold today, with periods of light rain. Rain amounts will be under 1/4″ for the most of the state, and temperatures will hold in the 40s all day. The average high for Birmingham on December 21 is 56. Rain will end from west to east this afternoon, and the sky will clear tonight.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow will be a brighter day… with a sunny sky we project a high in the low 50s after starting the day in the 32-35 degree range. Sunny weather continues Thursday with a high in the low 60s. The warm-up continues Friday… the sky will be partly sunny with a high in the mid to upper 60s.

CHRISTMAS WEEKEND: Christmas Day will be dry and spring-like. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with a high between 68 and 72 degrees… about 15 degrees above average, but not a record. The record high for December 25 is 78, set five years ago in 2016. Pretty much the same situation Sunday; dry and mild with a high not too far from 70 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: An upper high over the Gulf will continue to dominate our weather… the week looks dry with above average temperatures… highs in the 60s and low 70s for most places. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: An F4 tornado traveled 33 miles across Iron and Washington Counties in Missouri during an unusual time of day, 12:45 to 1:20 am. The tornado killed 3 and injured 52 others. Most of the intense damage occurred in the town of Potosi, about 55 miles southwest of St. Louis. The tornado swept through the business district, destroying City Hall, library, a large supermarket, and a shopping center complex. Northeast of town, two people were killed when their home was swept from its foundation

SUNNY AND SEASONAL: Dry air has returned to Alabama; we are starting the day with a clear sky and temperatures in the 28-35 degree range for most places. The sky will be sunny today with a high in the mid 50s… the average high for Birmingham on December 22 is 56. Tonight will be clear and cold… most places will go below freezing early tomorrow in the 24-32 degree range. It will most likely be our last sub-freezing morning of 2021.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND: Look for a big warm-up tomorrow… with sunshine in full supply expect a high in the low 60s. Then, we rise into the upper 60s Friday with a good supply of sunshine.

Christmas Day will be dry and warm with a high in the low to mid 70s. The latest NBM (National Blend of Models) is printing a high of 74 degrees for Birmingham Saturday. If we reach that, it will be a tie for the third warmest Christmas Day on record (tied with 1987, when the high was also 74). Temperatures have reached or exceeded 70 degrees in Birmingham on December 25 ten times since 1900…

    2016 78
    2015 77
    1987 74
    1982 73
    1942 73
    1964 72
    1926 71
    1922 71
    2019 70
    1901 70

Sunday will be dry as well… we are forecasting a partly to mostly sunny sky with a high in the 70-75 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: Mild weather will continue across the Deep South thanks to an upper ridge over the northern Gulf of Mexico. New global model data suggests some rain is likely over the northern 2/3 of the state by Wednesday… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

While we will see temperatures above average next week, brutally cold air will cover parts of the northern U.S. and the western half of Canada…. many places there stay below zero all week. We will keep an eye on that airmass since at some point it will have to move.

ON THIS DATE IN 1929: Weather records show that 5.5 inches of snow fell at the Birmingham Weather Bureau office on December 22, 1929. On December 24th, there was still 2.5 inches of snow on the ground at 7 PM. However, most of the snow melted Christmas Day when the temperature climbed to 51 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Extremely cold air rolled into the Deep South. A dusting fell across most of North Alabama but parts of Sand Mountain had one inch of accumulation, including two inches in Crossville. Even more amazing was the snowfall that was occurring along the Gulf Coast, the Florida Peninsula, and up the Georgia Coast. Snow and ice-covered the ground in New Orleans. It snowed in places like Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, Panama City Beach, Tampa and Daytona Beach. It was the most widespread snowstorm in the history of Florida. Two inches fell at Savannah and 3.9 inches in Charleston, South Carolina. As the low moved up the coast, it intensified, dumping an astonishing 15 inches of snow at Wilmington, North Carolina and 13.3 inches at Cape Hatteras.

Whew just got back from Utah, super fun trip! Here's a few photos:

Stopped in Sedona first, Broken Arrow Trail
    sedona-min.jpg
    sedona2-min.jpg

Next stop was Alstrom Point, UT
    alstrom-min.jpg

From Alstrom Point, there's a 70 mile trail called Croton Road to Escalante, probably my favorite road I have ever driven. Great mix of easy scenic driving, hard technical cliff edge rock crawling, driving down an iced over river in a canyon, and spots to bomb down a dirt road a 70mph
    croton rd 2-min.jpg
    croton rd-min.jpg

Hole in the Rock trail near Halls Crossing, UT. Made it about 20 miles in and decided to turn around. Snow had fallen the night before and i did not want to get stuck, was my first time wheeling on snow/ice and did not want to push my luck lol also the cloud shelf from the storm was memorizing, wish the pic could do it justice
    hole in the rock-min.jpg

Of course I had to do Hell's Revenge in Moab with my newly converted 4x4. Though i felt a little less manly when i saw brand new Honda Pilot out there:rofl: they worked for Honda and were doing testing
    moab 2-min.jpg
    moab-min.jpg

Top of the World trail with obligatory picture. Trail was the hardest of any on the trip, more than Hell's Revenge and Fin and Things, mainly because it was so snowy/icy on the climb. Really pushed my truck hard but the payoff was worth it!
    top of world 2-min.jpg
    top of world-min.jpg

Finished off the trip in Sand Hollow. Super fun climbing dunes pushing 4-5k RPM in 1st gear LOL

Shoulda stopped by Winder and Moab motorsports and said Hi to Matt and Rory! Snow changes everything just like rain. Hole in the rock is a bucket list for me. There are some optional lines there that look fun, plus just the story and history of it is pretty cool with the Mormons.

I'd be down but I think summer would best suit our schedule when the kiddo is out of school. I want her to come get to see the country and experience the sites and views and beauty it has to offer. Plus it'd be educational for her as well.
