When I was a kid in the 70s my Dad and Uncle would buy VWs to restore and flip while laid off from the steel mills so l got good at doing repairs early on.

Only if you took the old one out, haha. If you don't touch it, that o-ring can probably last the life of the truck.

Years ago I might have been a night time janitor at a large, now former, company who had many car service centers at malls around the country. I might have kept myself occupied by going through desk drawers and file cabinets and reading company files. I might have read the pending court cases in the lawyer's office.

Yeah, file after file of where they forgot to tighten lug nuts and then bad things happened. For the lucky the tire came off in the mall parking lot. However, sometimes people made it out onto a highway.

Yup. I remember back in high school, the kids that had an extra few $$, the first they did was install the aftermarket oil filter kit on their VW Bugs.
Also had a couple old Honda motorcycles with the centrifugal 'filter' where you just cleaned the scrud out of the cylinder every so often..

Bingo. Why I'm glad I have the 4 cyl. I'm still perplexed as to exactly why any auto manufacturer would still be using 1950's oil filter technology.

A friend of mine took car to Toyota dealership to get oil change and tire rotation done. He must’ve had some suspicion about tires and marked one of them. They didn’t rotate the tires and I’m fairly sure they didn’t do anything that day. Dealerships are the downfall of the car brand. When I was 16 the quick lubes first started up and I watched a 20 year old through window work on my old Camaro. He was trying to open hood with Crowbar… oil change didn’t go well either. Stopped him on use of crowbar though. I’ve known a few people that worked as dealership mechanics or managers… they were crooks. I can’t imagine how many customers they probably screwed over. Lastly little mom and pop shops are also crooked too. My dad bought a high school athletics coupon book for our small town. One was a free oil change and my dad never did his own. He smoked and was leaning against wall outside of mechanics bay. Car was on lift and he watched them do change but also drum up some extra work! Mechanic took oil can to rear axle housing and added a simulated leak. He waited and they presented their findings and he told them what he watched them do… wasn’t long after that they were shut down. Not sure how you do it but if you can find a reliable been around forever independent shop. One with people willing to wait for them to work on their car… then you’ve got a winner! That business has figured out that it is more profitable in long run to actually do the work. If the dealerships/crooks would work as hard to do the work as they do trying to screw you then automotive world would be a better place. Anyway I just do it myself and buy the only reliable brand name car Toyota! As mentioned by others your vehicle is probably fine and if you use the good oil and other great products it’ll run forever. I don’t think you should pass your bad luck (vehicle) onto someone else… that’ll come back on you…in bad way. So do your own work from now on too and tell your story to everyone you can. That is how it returns on them that did you wrong.

And sometimes shit happens even when you do care and being conciseness. Like the time I was changing the oil on my car in my girlfriend's fathers garage and suddenly realized that the big puddle of oil was growing equally to the amount of new oil I was pouring in.

If the dealership changes your oil all the time how do you know they replace the filter at all? You can easily check the color of the oil but not the filter. With the old school spin on filters you could tell, I even marked the filter to be sure.

The dealership won't be touching my truck now that I've had my two free oil changes unless for waranty or recall issues.

I'm also doing the spin on conversion next oil change.

Oh absolutely. My point is that buddy is naive to think this sort of thing cannot happen.

I understand how it could happen. Someone distracts you or you just get in a hurry.

Leaving the filter out for one oil change probably didn’t hurt anything although I would be ticked off. As others have said the dealer isn’t going to do anything. Your word against theirs.

I have gotten used to the throw away element, I don’t like it but I am used to it.
Two things I do to verify that I replaced the filter is one, I pour oil to the lip of the canister to lessen the oil starvation time at start up. And two, I put the old filter in the now empty box the new one came in before I fill the crankcase. I also fill up the should be empty oil bottles with the old oil to help verify new oil has been added. After cleanup the last thing I do is crank it up and check for leaks.

Not sure why you trust the dealership to do the free ones, but not beyond that. The first couple oil changes are the most important. I changed my oil at 5k and there were visible bronze/metal particles in the bottom of the oil canister. If you don't trust your dealer to service your truck, then i would find a different one. Don't get me wrong, I do my own maintenance as well and sometimes have to go to the dealer for TSB's and warranty work as you pointed out. But if I don't trust someone to do oil change 3-25, I certainly won't trust them to do 1 & 2 in the name of saving $50.

But I'm cheap and couldn't pass up the free changes. I did double check everything after they changed the oil to make sure all was well. I did the 2nd change, they were booked for two weeks and I was going on a long trip, so they did 1st and 3rd. I care more about my truck than any shop tech, if you can call the oil changers that.

Used canister oil filters are a problem for recycling. The loose elements make less waste, and you don’t have to throw out the can, and it’s less expensive overall to produce. In some ways it’s a more optimized system if you aren’t a complete jackass and leave the filter element out.

Ahhh yes, recycling, not sure how you’d recycle the oily paper, but metal is basically the only item we “recycle” that actually saves anything. Scrap metal has a value unlike dirty paper.

The problem with used filter canisters is the volume of oil that remains in them, making recycling a challenge compared to say, a soup can.
