Same thing in WA. I don't live there but if you live in Spokane city limits, you have to go through emissions nonsense. But two feet outside of city limits you could drive a rust-bucket with nuts and bolts falling off and spewing black clouds.. And nobody gives a shit.

Inspections are horseshit government overreach anyway. Always preferred states that don't have them.

I failed an inspection in my Subaru in VA one year. Had a cracked fog light glass. Went home, took them out and passed. Went back home and put them back in. So, every year I just took them out and never had another problem.

As others have said, it all depends on how closely the guy inspecting looks. Living so close to TN which does not have any sort of safety inspection, I see all sorts of vehicles that are a hazard to everyone around them. From massively bent frames to not having major body parts. The inspections have their purpose and I agree with them making the owner accountable in some way for their ride.

Retrofit lights just don't jump out at me as a massive failure of inspection reason. Now if you're running some tinted bulb to look cool, that's a different story. I'm sure everyone on here that is lifted also took the time to re-aim their headlights, right? No different blinding people that way.

Everyone loves to hate California but Virginia can be far worse. For example the $2000/year property tax I pay for my Tacoma.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons why many people are moving to FL. One inspection when you get the vehicle and that's it.

This is true! I lived in VA for almost 28 years, then moved to TN. It’s amazing the difference inspection stickers make!

You'll usually only get nailed for stuff like that at a dealership or similar places. Mom and pop places are the best for safety inspection for modified vehicles in VA.

They both contain vowels, so there’s that.

I run LEDs by Diedo Dynamics and they are perfect, nice throw and light up the road better than any halogen lights that I tried namely the GE mega 130. The DD LEDs ight up the sides of the road nice and are a step above the cheap ones on Amazon. I have never ever been flashed and prior to driving the truck I tested the lights with me driving in another vehicle passing it several times as someone was driving mine and saw no problems. So all the science is really nice and is a good guide but don't sell out the nicer LEDs mage dy DD and other higher end companies making LEDs. I recommend SL1s LEDs from Diedo Dynamics and been using them for maybe 3 years. People have their opinions and research which is viewed but seeing is beliving, so for me thats all that matters!

Ya just a personal preference.. I came from a vehicle with OEM LED's. Swapped the ones on the truck as soon as I got it cause I wasn't happy with the temperature and throw.

I think there needs to be oversight on what is allowed on the roads.. just not happy with the fine-tooth comb interpretation of the rules. I'm not driving around in a rust bucket.. it's a brand new truck with some different light bulbs. Bigger fish to fry out there in my opinion.

Crazy rules, we have to pay for the emission test but a POS that is blowing blue smoke can drive around town because it’s registered outside the test boundary. Makes no sense whatsoever. Also I see tons of cars everywhere that have headlights and brake lights out.

    Ok.....many are missing the point.

The problem is plunking LED into a Halogen housing. A full change to LED with LED housing would comply with the requirements. IE, the bulb and housing need to match....

    Doesn't seem too complex.

Yeah, that's called liability law and it is a present incentive even in the absence of vehicle inspections. You don't want your brakes to fail in a state that does not require inspections for the same reason you don't want your brakes to fail in a state that does.

The *best* argument that could possibly be made for inspections is that they reduce the number of hazardous vehicles on the road, but I dispute this argument because people who ignore the aforementioned incentives and drive a high risk vehicle do so either because they cannot afford to bring the vehicle into compliance or because, like the 1 in 5 drivers in the US that drive without the required insurance coverage, they are simply willing to risk the consequences including a citation for out of date inspection/registration.

The whole thing reminds me of the stupidity of gun control laws. Murder has been illegal since time immemorial and has severe consequences. People willing to do *that* are not concerned with gun law penalties. Similarly, Manslaughter from a tire blowout or mechanical failure of a negligently unmaintained vehicle carries extremely severe consequences and people who are willing to risk that are not concerned with inspection law penalties.

When I lived in AZ/WY (non-inspection states) my vehicles were always in good working order because *I* had a very good reason to keep them that way without any regard whatsoever to how the local/state authorities felt about it.

For what it’s worth, I run the H11 recommended in that thread that require the slight mod to work and they are bright af. I’d try them before you make the switch. They are cheap too.
