So the owner's insurance paid for that, or Toyota did due to manufacturer defect?

certain or all W210 chassis Mercedes supposedly was prone to rust easily. Not happening as much in CA where the model and brand is more prevalent due to mild weather.
Supposedly it was found to be dull blades on the machines that cut the metal for panels, making them porous and more prone to retain water causing rust.
I wonder if that was the case with the Taco frame

metulsa inc makes the frames now. 3rd gens seem to be holding up better. replacement frames also hold up better. but still lack of cleaning under the truck in the winter will still net rust/rot

Ah, you forget about the whole 6.0 liter Powerstroke diesel debacle in 2003. Quite possibly the biggest new product introduction mess up in Ford's history. The engine had more issues than I care to count. (We had 2 in our fleet. When they ran, they ran like raped apes. When they didn't - which was most of the time ...) Oddly enough, they managed to never actually recall any of them. The got by with numerous Special Service programs. BTW, the real fix was a very significant (and costly) redesign of the fuel injection system the following year.

Dana Corp made the bad frames, as well as the replacement. Had my 02 done, it was great. There was a lot CYA from Dana and Toyota.

My daughter's 2021 had the CRC treatment and frame plugs installed from the factory.
I sprayed the rest of the sandwiched area of the frame, and up into the weep holes on the pinch weld of the rockers and cab corners. I also sprayed up into her doors. Her truck originated in Austin and was going to Minot, ND so we knew it would see some snow.
A little PM on these frames goes a long way.

This was yesterday morning; I'm pretty sure it actually snowed in the wee hours of Christmas Eve...

I think all the old rotten frames get melted down and the steel is used in the newer model Tacoma’s
