Do they really make a 2WD off-road? I don’t understand that. Better model options would be manual tranny on all and drop 2WD off-road.

So it seems that Toyota is charging $1710 for a transfer case with low range, auto hubs + front differential? That seems like a steal. Either the 4WD are getting a deal or the 2WD is overpriced. My opinion.

All the trucks I've ever had have been 2wd. I wouldn't mind a 4x4 but I wouldn't use it. My new one is 2wd since it was easy to make a deal on.

They’ve been making it since the first Gen. If it didn’t sell they wouldn’t still be making it.

Why? 2wd can still be very capable.

I just tell people buy what they want. I didn’t need a 3 bedroom house, but I have it. I don’t need leather seats in my Tacoma, but I have them. I don’t need a 65 inch TV, but I have one.

IF they had low range I would agree. IF they had locking diff definitely. No low range, no locking diff, not so much. Just clearance then. I’ve done it. One of the big issues is low weight over drive wheels

I have a 4x2 Off-Road model, 2019. My truck has been off the pavement only a hand full of times, with every time the truck has done well. I do have a rear diff locker in the back which I have never used to get me unstuck. Honestly for me I knew my truck would be on pavement 98% of the time. But it is nice to know I can go places off road too just maybe not as many places as someone whole has 4x4. A lot of it comes down to tires and maybe suspension.

Visual appeal and not due to functionality. My opinion. Then again I’m Not an expert. Just someone whose been off-roading for over thirty years. And I drive in snow a lot so that has a big impact On My Opinion of the value of 2WD pickups. You guys who drive without any snow, in the desert, totally different situation.

I agree. I checked the difference when I was looking for my truck and thought it was a reasonable cost to make the jump. Also, in addition to the above referenced upgrades, I'd assume there are other components in the truck and on the chassis that are included to accommodate the mechanical components of the 4WD setup. (i.e.: different shocks ratings/valving, springs, sway bar size, etc.)

Sure. You're not going to dig yourself out of snow or mud but you can definitely have a good time.

Lots of places accessible to 2 WD for sure - especially with some clearance.

I had a 2wd 2nd gen for 11 years and got accustomed to driving it in the snow. It definitely limits what you can do and I wouldn't choose 2wd again.

I guess it depends on location but even then I've seen 2wd trucks stuck in something as simple as wet grass. For me 2wd is not even an option unless it's some dirt cheap shit box I'm using as a yard truck and even then I'd prefer a 4x4..

If it never snowed here or the dirt roads turned to deep spooge every spring, i'd still have my 2wd's. I really miss doing 50-60 mph donuts down the interstate during a snowstorm, and constantly having someone pull me out of the mud now that i've had only 4wd trucks.

Yup I agree. When I lived in Vermont I only had 4x4s. Between the snow and mud season it was a must. Now that I've left that all behind I don't need the 4x4 any more, so my current Sport is a 4x2.
