Been debating getting a new daily driver and letting the taco go wild and live on a trailer. I’ve had my taco since it was new. First owner. Driven it since I was 18. My wife has said it’s ok to get a new truck once every 13 years if I want haha. I don’t know much about other trucks. Leaning towards the ‘21 F-150. Plenty of power to be a crawler hauler and handle everything I need for work, house/office remodel and randomly hauling the tractor while still being smallish enough to daily and haul kids and make long trips. Tundra seems too big. What are y’all’s thoughts?

The f150 is bigger than you think. They now share the same cabs as the f250/350. But my buddy has one that does well hauling his rig. I'd rather have a Ford than anything else as far as 1/2 ton.

F-150 is just as big as a tundra these days. I guess it boils down to what engine you’re considering. We work on all of them at the shop, and I still gotta say we see less issues with the tundras over all of the others.

I love my 2020 tundra. Very comfortable to drive and does a great job hauling. Maybe not as many fancy features as some of the domestic ones but I like the reliability of it and it has enough features.

edit: the tundra is about comparable in size as mentioned but it just feels big because the interior is fucking huge, which I view as a perk. Only took a couple days to get used to the size while driving it around.

I didn’t realize that. My last experience with a f150 was my brothers around 2006. I need to go lay hands on one and a tundra. Looks like the tundra is almost two feet longer in the shortest bed configurations though.

I’m between the new hybrid and the v8. The on board generator is a nice feature for me as I use power tools remotely around our land. The 7kw is overkill unless I want to tie into the house with a transfer switch (appealing out here in the sticks) and only available with the hybrid, but I’d probably opt to get it if getting the hybrid since it’s only an extra $750. The v8 can run the 2.4kw generator option.

I don’t know why but I’ve always thought tundras were huge, but it looks like the f150s are about the same size after all. I need to sit in both and see. I like the idea of another Toyota. The 2022 is the first tundra that caught my eye aesthetically honestly. I wasn’t too keen on earlier models.

that’s funny because I think the new generation of tundras looks ugly af. I can’t get on board with that front end. I never liked tundras either until I looked a bit closer. The crewmax TRD sports are sexy, but I’m obviously biased lol they look even better without these fucking moose ear mirrors but they’re really handy, so function over form in this case.

Alright that one looks good, so maybe I’m thinking of the earlier ones. 13/18 mpg is hard given the hybrid f150 gets 24/25. I’m not a stickler for MPG and my company pays my gas, but that’s a pretty big jump. Enough to notice.

Yeah the dinosaur definitely hurts but I wanted that Toyota reliability personally and was less worried about a few extra stops at the gas station.

Reliability trumps fuel economy just about every time. Also keep in mind resale. Something none of the domestics are good at.

Yeah but effff all that. We see so much stuff go wrong on the new diesels. Unless it was my job to haul stuff I wouldn’t ever consider one.

I’ll take reliability over fuel economy. The tundra is a contender. I like some of the towing options in the 2022. Seems like the f150 has a better resale than others outside of Toyota. That being said, I plan on keeping until it’s not an issue so reliability and longevity are key.

though i will say i have a buddy who had a 16 tundra and towing a smaller toy hauler w/sxs got like 6-7 mpg.... he sold it after a year and bought a 18 ram 2500 before i got mine.... he loves the 2500. But granted a 3/4 or 1 ton truck is not for anyone but if your going to be towing alot a diesel option is always something to keep in mind.
