The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

Please let there be a 4000k option! I’ve been holding out for this for a while now.

 

While it would almost certainly be warranty voiding and I'm not recommending anyone do this, in theory you could re-solder some of the same LED chips in 4000k onto the board. Or 5000k. Or 3000k if you wanted for some reason.

 

Does anyone know if the light switch that comes with the heavy duty wiring harness- dual output that Hotshot Offroad sells is the tall one? I'm wiring some DD SS3s Max into a 2nd Gen Tacoma that is not pre-wired. Thanks!

Cross post from my build thread on the SS3 selective yellow Max. Had a less than ideal 9 hour drive across 3 mountain pass highways in the snow today after being forced to turn around near the summit when the first mountain pass closed due to extreme snow and accidents.

Despite having heated headlights, today I set out to cross the passes mid-day in extreme snow where lighting would be a non-issue. Nearing the mountain summit traffic stopped, for a very long time. The highway was abruptly closed due to extreme snow conditions and several accidents. Traffic was being turned around back down the mountain. With Grandmas Christmas visit on the line, we rerouted and set out on a 6 hour detour that would take us across multiple other mountain passes in the snow after dark, again. The heated JW Speaker headlights did their job holding the snow at bay and keeping the headlights clear providing lighting despite the freezing sticking snow conditions. The J2s less uplight than OEM also interestingly created less 'star wars light speed' effect in the snow. Routing off the major interstate after crossing the first pass and going onto the small remote 2 lane mountain highway for the second pass, I clicked on the Max fogs to heat them up for the likely sketchy drive ahead. Except nothing happened. On/off/on/off and nothing. Confused. It took me a moment to realize what was going on. The front end was covered in so much snow pack the fogs were completely buried in deep snow blocking the light output. Fortunately the Max fogs run at 200+ degrees. Max fogs on. Over the period of many minutes I watched my beam pattern become more and more yellow as the Max fogs melted everything obstructing their light output, once again providing outstanding lighting in freezing snowy poor weather conditions. The @Diode Dynamics SS3 selective yellow Max fogs are rapidly becoming my favorite lighting product of all time.

One of the threaded portions on the Bezel is stripped so maybe not tonight...

Sealed the bezel with electrical tape for now.

If I’m honest I anticipated the flood portion to completely cover the hood, but being only half it actually doesn’t change much from when I had the Clear Driving Lens on the Selective Yellow SS3 pods.

I’ll get more pictures after we get dumped on with snow tonight

 

What do you mean sealed the bezel? Was yours leaking?

 

One of the 4 threaded spots was stripped (most likely by me the first time I swapped lenses) so I tightly wrapped the split portion with electrical tape to add an extra layer of protection from moisture. Albeit, the gasket Diode Dynamics uses is pretty substantial so I'm not too concerned about water making it into the housing.

Snow has finally arrived

 

The drive home after dropping off the other half at work with the Diode Dynamics SS3 Max lighting up the full width of the road for everyone.

I meant to bring my thermal FLIR camera for some light temp measurements this weekend, it is supposed to be -6 in the morning. My parents OEM LED equipped RX370 rapidly has complete light failure in this weather. I'd love to see the thermals on JW's heated LED headlights and the selective yellow SS3 Max in -6 temps.

 

Were you testing the lights or practicing your steering with the gas pedal?

 

When clearing out the snow this morning I noticed the SS3 Max weren't quite as toasty as I remember. I look forward to seeing your results.

 

Keep in mind they take time to heat up. While they may be 200+ degrees in 60 ambient, at 20 ambient and pre-frozen, they will not be as hot and will take longer to get up to temp. I can vouch thought that they will get hot enough to clear the snow and provide the desired lighting. Unfortunately I didn't bring my FLIR this weekend, so I won't have measured results in the -6 degree temps to share.

 

It was about 18 degrees at the time with roughly 15 minutes of run time. Can happily attest not a speck of snow was on the pods after getting home.

 

Hmm, now I want to bring one to work so I can test at -60.
