Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S Review

I started at 40 and it was too stiff. Settled at 34 cold and they've been good. Might bump it up to 36. Haven't done a chalk test. Still getting around 15mpg after calculating for taller tires.

For anyone reading this... We're talking about the Toyo open country at3. I just wanted to go with something taller. The cooper at3 4s is a damn good tire and lasted me awhile. I wouldn't hesitate to go back with those. Just wanted something taller and try eload since I'm going on more remote camping trips this year.

 

I noticed the recommended size for my Tacoma has both a 4-ply and a 5-ply version. I'm curious if anyone can comment on the performance and durability difference between them?

The 4-ply version is on clearance for $130 CAD right now, but I'm hesitant to jump on them not knowing how they hold up.

 

Are those 17x7 4mm offset sema's with 265 65 17 tires? My tire guy said I needed to move up to 265 70 17 for the 7" rim. Hope they don't rub on my 22 sport im getting.

 

Just got mine installed, 265 70 17 on trd pro wheels. I love it, it's really good on snow and wet road. I'm from Vancouver Canada

 

No rubbing on the mudflaps or anywhere?

 

I don't notice any rubbing. My old tire has similar size: 265/70/16

 

I thought you could go 275? How’s the snow performance on mountain/resort roads?

 

All, I have a stock height 2013 Double Cab with some XD black rims and Toyo AT 265/70/16 which I am replacing due to dry rot. I am planning to get these Cooper AT3 4S tire but unsure if I get the same tire size I have now or bump up to 265/75/16 which is slighter taller. I've seen where others members are running 265/75/16 but unknown if they are stock height or leveled in the front .

265/75/16 should be fine pending offset of wheel.
Most likely if anything rubs it’ll be the nub that sticks out on the mud flap.
My 08 rubbed it so I used a heat gun and changed it’s shape.

 

Thanks. I have no idea what the off set is of the XD rims are. I checked the XD website but did not see the exact rim most likely because it's an old style. Probably best to stick with 265/70/16 tire size.

I’m about to change out my Patagonia MTs for Cooper AT3 4S on my 2005. Currently I run 265/70/17 on the MTs which comes in at a diameter of 31.9. I seldom rub…only in a tight turn when in a lean. My question for you tire experts…if I go to a more narrow width (255/75/17) which comes in at 31.97 diameter…will less width in the tire compensate for possible rubbing? (Basically the Cooper 255 are 1/2” narrower than the 265 Patagonias) I’m leveled in the front but nothing more.

 

Getting rid of my Cooper’s today. 265/70R16
Bought March of 2019 at around 20k. Today sitting at 62k. I think the wear was acceptable. I don’t like that they seem to be undersized compared to OEM or other choices in the factory size.
Handled upstate NY winters alright.

Unacceptable? The dry rot on a three year old tire. The rot started in heavy last year. Put three plugs in these tires in my time with them. Could that happen to any tire? Maybe, but I’ve only ever had to plug a tire once before getting these tires.

FWIW: I've run 2 sets of these Cooper tires and have loved them. I tend to be hard on tires driving on curvy paved mountain roads, with a decent amount spent on forest services / fire roads as well. As stated in my initial review, they performed fantastic. Between 30-40k both sets got a bit loud and wha wha like at highway speeds but they still had 7-8/32 tread left. I am often driving while taking work-related calls so I normally swap tires once they become louder.

So it was time to replace my 2nd set of Coopers and I just HAD to try something new out for the hell of it. Debated hard between the Toyo Open Country AT3s or the Wildpeaks. Decided to give the Falkens a try this go-around given the fan base they've built. In comparison, no question the Falkens win in aggressive looks, in spades. I haven't taken them off road yet, but based on the tread design I believe they'll do as well or better than the Coopers did which was always superb for my needs.

However, relative to the Coopers, the Falkens just feel more squishy on the highway, steering feels muted, cornering has more body roll feel to it, etc., The Coopers I felt like I could drive my truck super sporty on the pavement with confidence and never have an issue off pavement or in winter weather. Extremely responsive steering, braking, etc.,

Falkens make my truck less fun to drive by comparison, and even dry braking seems off/slow compared to the 4S tires. I'm going to give the Falkens a weekend trip to the mountains to make my final judgment but may find myself back at my tire shop to swap for another set of Coopers.

The AT3 4S is far from the coolest looking tire in the AT category, but it does everything really really well. I never experienced any dry rot or anything, though I did get a screw and a good sized nail on my last set that luckily stuck into the tread blocks and was just barely short enough not to give me a flat!

 

Pulled the trigger on a set of these based on this thread and the advice of my local tire shop. They look great in 265/75/16 with 0 offset wheels.

Just slightly more road noise than the Firestone Destination LE2 that came off the truck.

 

how many miles you got on your falkens rn? you dont mention road nosie with them either, unless im dumb and missed it lol. im on ridge grapplers and have 265/75/16 on taco and 265/70/17 on a 3rd gen 4runner... for some reason i love them on the runner and not so much on my taco. my taco stays on pavement 95% of the time and im like you, i want a cool look, but also i think i need function more than looks at the moment. nittos seem wear funny on the taco and may just be my driving style between the two, the ol girl runner gets treated like a queen on pavement and around corners etc. tbh im pretty sold on the cooper 4s.

 

Getting ready to replace my Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S tires at 45,000 miles on my 2016 TRD/Offroad. They are nearly worn down to the wear indicators, but have been rotated every 5K miles, inflation watched carefully, and no extreme driving conditions (e.g., no towing, no offroading except an occasional gravel forest road, 90% use is commuting in town). The Coopers were impressive for the first half of their lives (most tires are, right?) but they have been loud and of somewhat dubious traction for the past 20K miles or so. If I lived anywhere with real weather challenges they'd have been gone long ago. So much for the 65,000 mile tread claim, but I never put a lot of stock in that anyway. Overall, they were just ok. Love the look, but not worth the money overall. I'm going to replace them with plain jane Michelin Defender LTX's next. FWIW, I got about 40,000 miles out of the original Wranglers, now 45,000 out of these Coopers. I'm hoping to get 50,000 out of the Michelins, but maybe I'll do better. From what I read, they are a superior tire even if the styling is a bit plain. I think I can get over the looks, I can't see them when I'm driving.

 

Just threw some on my baby. Went up a size to 265/70/R17. What a difference! Pics don’t do them justice. These tires look sharp in person. If you’re on the fence about these. Get em!

Only posting on this older thread because it seems to be the most active regarding these tires.

I’ve got 36k on this set and they’ve got about 4/32 on them and are hydroplaning like crazy. I don’t drive fast or hard and only use them on gravel roads. No real off-roading. Have done rotations every 6k. These are the worst wearing tires I’ve ever owned. They were really nice until about 30k miles and I started to get slippage on wet pavement. Going with the Yokohama Geolandar A/Ts soon.
