Duel fuel tanks on a taco

@herrindude I've got a 25gal aux tank that sits where the spare tire would go. It's a solution that boxes the frame in to create mounting holes for the tank. It pumps directly into the main tank with a switch. It's balanced since it sits in between the frame rails.

as an alternative check out Summit or other aftermarket AUXILIARY FUEL CELLS in a variety of gallons

U could essentially plum in line series to gain gallons

 

It looks like you're configured for driving at 40-60mph across roads and flatter stuff, do you have any clearance concerns? Did you think about a skid plate of some sort?

 

Don't let how much it hangs down deceive you, the bumper is super high clearance. I also have a shitload of travel on the rear end. The tank is also wrapped in a stainless steel case so it's good to party.

 

I've been wanting something for Playa trips (burning man and mexico). @zcweisman has sold me something I needed.

 

Back in the 80’s Northwest Metal Products (Downey Off Road sold it) made a 11 or 13 gal tank that would fit up above the spare tire and lowered the tire by 3” and acting as the skid plate. It gravity feed the main tank. I had it on a couple of older Toyota pickups. Worked great.

Too bad this is not shipped to the US, it is something that I would love to have on my truck

Thinking about sticking one of these in the back, drivers side, next to the fuel cap. Then just using a shaker siphon to refill the tank.

I've not been under a Double Cab hilux in years, but doubt it'd fit - they're fairly different vehicles. Hilux is narrower and more condensed. Regardless, I'd like to try it out (on the taco)

nice job, was it custom made and how do you fill it? Where does it hook up to the main tank? The old Downey tank hook up to the feed line to the engine.
Yes I carry extra Jerry cans, 4-5 if need, but a 15-20 gal tank sitting where yours is at would be great.
There are still a few places in the country where you can go that you need fuel for 400 or more miles.
Twice my extra fuel saved my butt up in Canada/Alaska and I was just on the Alaskan Highway or Top of the World Highway, because a station was closed or didn’t have fuel.

 

But won’t his transmission be hunting for gears?
High altitude, high speed, jumping in and out of gears seems to be normal at high speeds.

So they sell the mounting hardware and plate and have sourced the tanks that fit. Then the plumbing is on you, right?
How did you set yours up? I was thinking an auxiliary pump on a switch in the cab that backfills the OEM tank would be slick.
I'd be really curious to see how the clearance looks with a stock bumper. But I get what you're saying about the high clearance bumper gives the illusion that it's lower than it really is.

 

I've been trying to track someone down that did this for like 9 months. Dude just pops out of nowhere

Any details on the plumbing that you could share?
Do you have a separate filler neck?
Did you tie into the OEM fuel system, if so how and any issues with error codes?
Do you have to remove the bed to install the JB fab kit?
