    Subs are great cars, especially in Ohio winters.

    Back in the day I owned a 94 Legacy and that little monster only got stuck twice in snow:
    1. In an un-plowed mall parking lot, eventually enough snow piled up in front of the car it couldn't push it anymore. Reversing and driving over the pile fixed the stuckness.
    2. In a plowed mall parking lot, I drove up one of those giant snow piles they make and none of the wheels were able to touch. Eventually a friend came with shovels and we dug out from underneath the car and it drove off the pile.
    Point being that I've got a big soft spot for them due to their capabilities in absolute muck.

    A lot of my friends have Subarus and they all love them; My friend's dad just bought him a brand new 2021 Outback and paid cash, so it's all his! When I was detailing cars at for a large chain of dealers, I drove many new Subarus; One time I even got to drive a stick shift CrossTrek!

    Yeah once they get going would be quite capable. Back in the late 70s early 80s my neighbor had a Subaru Brat, he would sit in the driveway cranking the engine trying to start it. Eventually he would drift it out in the street then me and my friends would push him down the road while he tried to catch it in gear, usually after a few pushes we would get him going.

    The transmission is likely just fine, change fluids hook up new or re built motor and probably get another 100k or more life out of it. Subaru Transmissions are pretty trouble free for the most part (kinda like Toyotas). The head gasket issue is prevalent with that year. I own 2 2010 Foresters, both have had head gaskets replaced. Both have 180K plus on them do what they are supposed to do. Once you get the gaskets sorted out, there really isn't much to worry about other than making sure they have relatively fresh oil, and a timing belt every 100k or so.

    My cousin's husband had a 2011 Impreza with automatic transmission that he bought used with hail damage in like 2014 or 2015; He quickly surpassed 100K miles and the transmission started having problems after it was serviced. Turns out that the transmission did not have enough fluid in it and was acting up because it was starved of the stuff; My cousin's husband traded the Subaru for a used2016 Jeep Cherokee (against my advice) in 2019, which has held up well so far (luckily it has the 3.6L V6 and not the shitty Fiat 4-banger)...

    My cousin has had the following cars since she got her license in 2005, in this order...

    • 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo
    • 1998 Audi Cabriolet
    • 2006 Scion xA
    • 2013 Honda CRV LX 4WD
    • 2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE AWD (Her first brand new car)

    She has a long commute and put almost 100K miles on the RAV4 in four years, and since buying the RAV4 they've had a kid and want a second, so my cousin traded the RAV4 for a brand new Highlander Hybrid in the summer of 2021!

    It's already replaced. Plus it's rusted all over the place. Ain't worth it.

    @shakerhood

    The saga of the seized Subaru engine ends tomorrow at Sullivan's Scrap; My friend's son tore it apart, deemed it to be not worth saving, and wants it out of the garage so he can work on his dirtbikes...

    Gwyn also had some other stuff for me to scrap!
