COMPLETED 5th Gen 4Runner BBK upgrade for 2nd Gen Tacomas

Just get oem 14WB’s for a later year model that had the M12 bolts. Online they’re like $150 a piece and so much nicer than remanned cheapie imported ones. Dust boots are nicer, the bleeder valves are 10mm instead of cheap 8mm ones you won’t have the right size wrench for inevitably - especially if you live in a corrosion state - Murphy’s law will make sure of that. Don’t get me wrong I bought a Callahan Tundra brake kit for like $230 with calipers, rotors, pads, and hardware for my budget build 3rd gen t4r, but for the off road rig the oem 14WB’s were definitely a big step up.

 

14WB transition year to m14 mounting bolts was 2015-2016, but just be aware you may want to pick these up in person to confirm instead of play the mail order game.

 

Oh, okay. I thought all 14WB's were setup for the M14 bolts; I didn't realize some would still have M12's.

So I should be targeting the 2014 T4R brake calipers?
The rest of my list look okay?

 

I ordered calipers from a vehicle that should have 12mm bolts so my bad I think those were the older ones and the calipers all are stamped 14wb I believe but if the model had 12mm bolts, the casting will have the M12 bolt holes.

 

PN 47730-60300 and 47750-60300 are 12mm, and worked for me.

So glad I found this. I checked my pads during wheel rotation last week and noticed I needed new pads and rotors.
-Old setup was stock rotors, calipers with EBC Yellow pads, extended braided lines all around, 17" Method 305 NV, 35" tires.
-New aftermarket 4runner blank rotors, calipers with Duralast Elites, ^(same as above)^.
I just installed everything today and am happy with the new setup! I think it was worth it, since I needed rotors anyways.
The only issues or snags I had was one rotor was stuck on the hub had to hammer it off, No one to pump the brakes lol I used the clear hose & brake fluid in the bottle trick, I just bent back my stock dust shield and picking the hottest day of the week to work on my truck outside.

2010 to May 2015 use

$13 M12x1.25 mm Self-Locking Nylon Insert Hex Lock Nuts, Pack of 6

M12x1.25 mounting bolts.
May 2015 onwards use M14x1.50 mounting bolts.

All use the same bleeder screws.

The 4Runner and the Tacoma with hydraulic booster use the same size master cylinder, swapping wouldn't change anything.

StopTech quality is slipping! The rotors wouldn't seat properly on the hub register. Once I sanded away the E-coat on the center bore with a Dremel, they fit correctly.

The calipers clear the FN Konig Six Shooter 17x8" wheels with room to spare:

 

The “electric booster” you are referring to is a hydraulic booster, with electronic controls.

The 4Runner’s electronically controlled hydraulic booster uses the same size master cylinder as the Tacoma’s electronically controlled hydraulic booster.

There are actual electric boosters, but Toyota doesn’t use them in any of their trucks.

Big times thanks to all those that have contributed to this swap!

I have completed the upgrade on a 3rd Gen (2016 SR5) and have a few tips to share. My swap included upgrading to Stoptech SS Braided lines, front and rear. I thought I had a good initial bleed, using a vacuum pump, however air must have traveled into the ABS module; pedal feel on the initial drive was pretty terrible. Engagement was low in the stroke, but the rotor/pad bite was significantly improved. Like a imbecile, I figured "hey, Toyota has got the right vacuum bleed systems and knowledge with bleeding the ABS module, I'll have them button up the job." Yeah, if only that was the case. I dropped off the truck with terrible pedal feel, and picked it right back up with the same feel. In short, they never bled the ABS. So, I took it upon myself to hook up Techstream and go through the process. It was straightforward, fully guided by the TS software. We ran through the process twice and now the pedal feel is right where it should be.

There is a thread somewhere on here that provides a download link and the process needed to get it working. The Tatrix cable to connect to the vehicle is from OVTune.

 

30 day ~ 3000mi report

Brakes are awesome. No pulsing pedal feel that occurred within a month of cleaning OEM brakes or the Powerstop kit that was on before. The only change I would do, is opt for a different brake pad, as the Greenstuff pads create a lot of dust. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this modification.

 

OEM-equivalent Advics pads are on sale at Wheeler's for only $40!

 

OP did a fantastic job on the initial write-up with all the pics & the controlled-test before & after videos & stopping distance comparisons.

Has anyone done any careful before/after stopping distance tests w/ stock 2nd gen Tacoma brakes vs. a 3-piston StopTech or WilWood BBK setup? Haven't found any TW threads on this so far. Would be interesting to see if a $2.2K full StopTech 3-piston BBK gives +25% or more improvement over the stock front disc brakes.

I have seen different views on having to upgrade the MC. Also, I saw where some factory 17's won't work. Does anyone know if the 5th gen T4R SR5 wheels will work?

 

Where did you read that? These are 4runner brakes.
