Crampons will a bit agro if you just want some extra traction for hiking. Adding some link for stuff that i personally work with since I work for Boa.

I have a pair of Grivel hybrid-style semiautomatic crampons, they don't need a toe welt but do need one on the heel that you could borrow... if you don't have the heel welt on your boot I may even have a set of full strap-on (lol) ones you could borrow that would work for normal boots, I'll have to dig in my closet to double check

I used to have a pair of kahtoola microspikes that worked pretty great for winter hiking/non mountaineering adventures but lost one.... that may be a good option as well!

 

Those looks pretty cool, would make snowblowing my sketchy ass steep icy driveway less sketchy

 

Those boots don't have compatible heel or toe for technical crampons, so @bot102 has to go strap-on. But crampons are total overkill for possibly encountering ice.

For your use case, I'd just recommend the knock off Kahtoola's. If you end up using them a lot and break them, buy the higher quality Kahtoolas.

The "ice walkers" and similar don't work so well when there is packed snow or packed snow on top of ice - they need to dig all the way down to ice to provide great benefit. The microspikes work great on ice and packed snow. I've even used them with trail runners and ran with them. They aren't too bulky or heavy.

Just take them off when you get back to longer dry or muddy sections.

 

Also, now that I looked up Mt. Snikatu, I recommend posting up the day before you plan on going so we can double check you with the Avalanche danger. It would really suck to have you go up on a high risk day and either bury yourself or trigger an avalanche that buries people below you...

 

Trail reports for a few days ago said the trail is mostly dry. Some patches of snow, ice under the snow.

Hoping to get into more of this as the year goes on and I start spending less money on the truck

Sniktau is super windy and wind scoured, I bet the trail is blown pretty clear of snow, just stay off any cornices! It basically follows the ridgeline so avy danger isn't too high, although there can be deadly slides lower down on Sniktau (sheep creek drainage) but you won't be venturing down there... We have had a ton of snow up here the last few days so avy conditions are extreme right now everywhere. Not a bad winter hike at all, just brutal wind conditions most of the time. If it is a high wind day and any snow comes it quickly becomes a whiteout and sketchy. Bundle up, have fun!

 

Was reading that just now, good to have a first hand account from someone who lives up that way!

 

Another vote in favor of microspikes or knock-offs, just make sure it's something with enough "tooth" like the microspikes have, and not something shorter like yaktrax.

Anyone have any "overlanding" shops they would recommend in Denver/front range area? picked up the Odin designs awning from Tim at 303 and looking at getting the bag replaced since the zipper is shot. I already sourced a replacement pole but trying to get a new bag or the zipper replaced. i dont have a big enough sewing machine to do the repair my self.

 

For a zipper replacement on the current bag you could try marine or auto upholstery shops

hahah found a guy in Denver that will do the repair for $100. now jsut need to order my HMO bars to go over the soft top.
