At times I think vehicle manufacturers give dealerships a kickback for denying warranty claims.

I was curious to see what the manual (2022) says about changing bulbs. Interestingly, you "may" only replace a handful of bulbs as DIY, and only if they are not LED. I'd be very curious to see the Toyota mechanic's manual instructions for changing a dome light bulb.

I should have called the dealership to read me the manual instructions!

OP I purchased the extended warranty as well as the glass/fob/tire stuff they offered. I paid more for the piece of mind in the long run. With all the tech stuff in these vehicles IMHO i think its worth the cost of up to ensure your covered for years to come.

If your modding your tacoma I would recommend on finding a mod friendly dealer. They are out there you will just have to search for them. Most dealers will point the finger if you put aftermarket parts on your vehicle and try to screw you. I had this happen in the past with a VW I owned. I found a dealer that legit sold a ton of a/m parts and covered them.

Everyone has different experiences with dealers good/bad/ugly. When modding a vehicle be prepared for pushback.

I plan on keeping my truck stock as long as possible in terms of lift/engine stuff. That way I can let Toyota deal with their problems if something fails.

Stuff like this makes me laugh (sorry OP). I wonder how far we are going to go with the whole 'computer controlled everything' movement? I dont pay attention to the third gen sections much cause I dont own one, but definitely not the first time Ive heard of this exact issue. Imagine what it will be like to work on a new vehicle in 20 years... Even more reason to make this truck last forever :D

At a certain point, it IS laughable. There's not much more you can do! I have no intention in parting with my little Ranger since it's my last connection with "low tech" if you can even call it that back in '98. EFI 4.0 liter with a M/T, the trans I just had rebuilt about 10k ago @210k...original clutch! My dream truck now is a '69 GMC 4x4 step side with a 3" lift. Not much tech in that and you can still get parts. I noticed in looking up something for my Ranger that I can't get some FoMoCo parts anymore as they are obsolete. The good thing is there are aftermarket available but I bet at some point, some critical components like the dinosaur ECU may go away, too. I've been shopping long blocks for it because I'm realistic that it won't go forever but this is a bad time and hard to get this stuff now.

Thats not so much Toyota taking care of you, it's the dealership. You are lucky to find a dealer these days that will go the extra mile for its customers. Some dealers have good warranty admins, and some have terrible ones.

With the use of your guidance, I'm going to give it a shot. I'm just limited by weather. We're actually getting significant rain here and my shop is full of shit that prevents me from getting the Taco in there.

This little tid bit of info might help some on here understand some of the pushback we all get from dealers, technicians mostly hate doing recalls and warranty work, they only get paid by the hour, not by the hour + % of non warranty work!

And... eventually either Toyota or the third party warranty underwriter is responsible... not the dealer. Dealer is just the agent in both scenarios and really has limited responsibility.

Yep...dealers won't work on anything still under warranty until Corp Headquarters give them the go ahead or they won't get reimbursed!

I’d be interested in hearing the story underlying that last sentence.
