I have looked into TRD's and Prerunner's and finding an affordable TRD is seemingly hard to come by, but Prerunner's seem to be plentiful. What I really want is the locking differential. Would it be better to find a prerunner and add an aftermarket e-locker or hold out and find a TRD? What would be the cost of adding an aftermarket e-locker?

op, iirc the diff is different (size?) in trd v. non-trd tacomas...i may be wrong:notsure:. having said that, it may be worthwhile to convert the truck yourself and stop the search...i can't imagine that you'd affect/effect a warranty at this point on a 1st gen.

    price: depends on the truck.

This may seem stupid... but you do realize that the Prerunner isn't 4X4 right? Or are your talking about regular Prerunners vs. TRD Prerunners?

there are many versions of the all mighty tacoma
    2x4 mini tacoma like mowtaco
prerunner tacoma looks like a 4x4 truck (no locker 2x4)
    prerunner trd 2x4 tacoma has a locker(looks like 4x4)
4x4 tacoma non trd (no locker)
4x4 tacoma TRD with a locker

I am sure there are more versions out there, these are most common tho.
My buddy has a tacoma like mowtaco that is 4x4 with the 2.7 from the factory.

If u have any question that u will go wheeling make sure u at least get a trd prerunner, or install an after market locker.

if you absolutely want an elocker, i'd hold out to find a TRD truck. It's pretty common to find complete elocker rears for sale, but some of them dont include the factory wiring, plus it might take longer to find a complete rear for sale than it will take to find a TRD truck.

if you dont care about having a selectable locker, get an aussie.

I'm talking about a 2WD Prerunner or a 2WD TRD. I looked at the Aussie locker and it looks as though they don't offer a locker for the 1st gens. Any other locker ideas? Maybe I'll just hold out for the TRD...they are just quite a bit more expensive in my area.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

i think he just wants a Prerunner and can't decide whether or not to pay the extra money for the TRD.

I say if you plan on modding it like lift and tires it might be cheaper to just get the base and add a locker later.

Going on 3 years with my Aussie and I have no complaints. Awesome locker and dirt cheap.

Sometimes it pays to have the 7.5" rear end....
