I only tie trucks down using the lower arms, axles or I beams, never around the tires. My truck is 84” wide and one of my flat trailers is only 82”... one inch of hang off on either side is fine. Been doing it this way for 20yrs and never once had a problem. Then again what do I know :)

You know how to build trucks I know that. Hence why I ask the questions I do about trucks.

All my wisdom comes from being around professional race teams my whole life... I guess they all tie their trucks down incorrectly too :)

The only critiquing I have is X them straps. We once had a car shift in an enclosed car hauler with the straps straight. Coulda been the vinyl floor. Either way it’s not happening with them X’d.

As long as you give the last strap a tug and say "she's not going anywhere", you'll be fine

I know it’s common to X them but after doing my research so I can be safe, straight back is what the consensus was. If they’re X’d and one strap fails then the other strap is useless because it doesn’t have the other strap to pull against. If they’re straight back and one fails, you still have the other strap there.

I mean, if a strap fails you’re in trouble anyways. I know it’s a big debate. What we do is x rear V front with a safety chain in the center front and rear. It’s likely way overkill. But straps should be checked periodically on long hauls anyways.

Extra straps/chains certainly never hurt, that’s for sure. I stop at each rest stop and check my load because it also gives me a chance to stretch my legs real quick. The last thing I want is Betty white yeeting herself off of the trailer at 70 mph.

Yeah that would absolutely blow. When we had that car shift on us we think it was from going over a set of uneven train tracks that bucked the trailer a bit. It was 100% tight. After that we’ve always done the above with no issues. Straight just scares me a bit because there is nothing to stop side to side.

With 35” tires I would honestly be surprised if it shifted. With all that sidewall, I can squish the tires down a little bit as I tighten the straps and it’ll bite into the wooden deck pretty good. I get what you’re saying though.

I’ve always just gone out to the corners of the trailer from the rear axle, locks my truck in really good. But I also have drive over fenders and the rear wheels are tight up against them to get my tongue weight higher. I think the whole thing will be determined by what your trailer is and what the load is. There really isn’t a one fits all solution for load securing, everything will be situational dependent.

Y’all don’t just put the truck in park with the e-brake when trailering?

I do too. I said “in gear”earlier because I’m a manual. Last thing I want is it rolling off the trailer as I unstrap it

Edit: oh I think harry and I both missed the joke of just not using straps.
