Who Knows the 1st Gen Brakes?

Who knows the brake system on the 1st gen trucks?

I'm in the process of replacing the outer axle oil seals on my 02 4x4. Since everything in the brake drums is a total mess, I'm cleaning up and replacing parts while I'm in there. The shoes and the drums appear to be ok. I'm going to replace the wheel cylinders on both sides.

My question has to do with the bell crank that goes from the parking brake cable through the brake drum backing plate. It seems to be heavily corroded and the outter rubber boot is half full of debris of some sort. I don't know if it is dirt and mud or rust. It is also very difficult to move the crank. Can this part be removed and cleaned up or is it going to need to be replaced. I can get pictures if needed.....let me know.

While searching for replacement parts, I stumbled across a thread in Tundra Solutions that pertains to this particular issue. The drum brakes on the early Tundras are the the same as the Tacomas. If anyone else experiences this, here's some helpful reading.

 

Hey toy4life, I had the same problem with one of mine, not as rusted, its easier to replace the assy. Purchased oem parts price was not to bad. I was told the Tacoma's are known for that problem.

 

Thanks. I was actually able to get them moving freely. If financial circumstances were different, I would have just replaced them, but I had to go old school and actually fix.
