And then Gwyn has had nothing but bad luck with Subarus this year; She totaled a 2013 Outback with only 60K miles on it, and then the engine seized in the 2010 Forester that replaced the Legacy just two weeks after she bought it...

Now, with the engine in Gwyn's 2010 Forester replaced, her daughter opted to sell her 2010 Forester because it just had over a thousand bucks worth of work done and now needs about three grand worth!

I see this as a learning opportunity for the son. Just give him the truck as is and let him figure make the decisions and spend whatever money needs spent.

    Tough love

Good thing the rabbits are in a fully enclosed cage. What kind of enclosure do they have?

Rabbits don’t last long where I live (owls, bobcats, coyotes, fox, dogs, house cats…etc).

Lol I would agree in most cases, but I’ve done an engine and transmission r&r in one of these and it’s a huge job if he doesn’t have the correct tools (long extensions, trans jack, torque wrenches, impact, etc.) and a half way December amount of experience, it won’t look pretty.

Truth. You definitely need to have some decent experience. And on top of that, if you don’t have trans jack and aren’t familiar with the transmission and it’s weight distribution and how to strap her down, a person could easily drop the transmission on to the ground and crack the case or even worse, drop it on themselves and could get hurt pretty

confidence in skills and also a bit of patience for this to be a DIY.

The 3rd time I dropped a trans for a clutch, it still took me 2 full days(albeit the pilot bearing had shredded apart and the grease method for removing the pilot bearing doesn’t work as easy when you only have the outer ring of the bearing left) and an excessive amount of cursing. :D

I got that ring out with a cutting wheel on my dremel - they tend to be in there tight.

If I were paying a shop to replace a clutch, (just did a couple months ago) I would have them replace everything that requires dropping the tranny. (I did) Pressure plate, disc, flywheel (resurface if appropriate) pilot bearing, throw out bearing/fork, rear main seal. As was stated, parts are a small part of the cost. Would be a shame to pay all that labor to replace a $20 part.

Same philosophy if you do it yourself. Don't want to go through all that work again just for a $20 part.

My truck has over 143K miles on it, but there is nothing wrong with it and it just got the frame replaced; However, it lacks certain safety features that newer vehicles have...

I like the looks of the Maverick, but I'm not much of a Ford guy, and I honestly don't trust these small turbocharged engines; I am currently saving up for a house and especially with the frame replacement did not want to buy a new vehicle in today's market, but my truck does lack things like blind spot monitors and automatic braking.

I am leaning towards not getting rid of my Taco, but the base Maverick with 4WD and all the safety features I'd want seems like a decent deal.

    What does everybody else think?

Give it another year or two to see how the maverick shakes out on reliability. Its a new model, its gonna have issues.

Keep your truck Charlie. Think about what you could with that monthly payment instead

I saw my first Maverick in the wild today. I didn’t not like it. It seems A little more car-like, but it seems like a decent little truck for light duty stuff. I really like the AWD option (I’ll take a good AWD system over 4WD in winter anytime). Would I sell my Tacoma and get one? No. If I was looking for a truck right now, I’d still go Tacoma as well. In a couple years (see how it holds up, see what aftermarket pops up, etc…) it would be a very serious consideration for me.

Keep your truck until you secure the house you want. Save those car payments in a high interest account instead. You'll want to keep your debts and credit utilization low to keep your credit rating as high as possible. Banks don't like large purchases when you're trying to buy a house. Plus, homes build equity and are a tax write off. Vehicles are generally a depreciating asset.
