My 1980 Toyota 2WD Hilux with the 4 cyl 20R carbureted engine got the same mileage per gallon as my current 2017 6 cyl Off Road does....... and here I expected engine technology to advance over time.

So a smaller engine with 2wd got similar mileage as a bigger engine with more power? You don't say? Does your tacoma have 4wd? How often are you rebuilding/tuning your carb on your tacoma? Any difference in ride quality or creature comforts? LOL

Obviously there are differences between these two trucks. Weight being a big difference. I sold the Hilux a long time ago, in the late 90's. But in 40 years, engine technology should easily have advanced way beyond being able to get the same MPG with a bit larger engine and little bit heavier vehicle.

A neighbor of ours, back in the 70's, was a traveling sales rep of some kind. He drove all over the southwestern US constantly for work. He had a little Japanese "roller skate" type car of around 1970 - 1974 vintage. It was a 3 cyl, carb'd engine. He claimed he got between 40 - 45 MPG on average. And that was with leaded gasoline. Fast forward almost 50+ years, and the only gasoline powered anything that gets anywhere close to 40 MPG is a motorcycle. That's backwards "progress".

Once again tho, you're comparing a 3cyl engine to a 4, or even 6yl having twice the displacement probably doing all highway travel. You also might want to look at the average mpg during the time period of vehicles you're talking about. You're literally comparing muscle cars, heavy trucks, and "sedans" that were essentially steel boats with wheels going down the road getting 8 mpg. Maintenance costs, fuel costs, and reliability of the vehicles in the 70's and now were completely different worlds. Big difference. We also would be a lot farther along if we didn't have oil/gas companies slowing/holding back tech and old consumers constantly saying "everything was better back then" when clearly it was not. Remember trying to get a carbed vehicle to start when it was cold af or had been sitting for a while? Look at the average mpg now vs the 70's and it's substantial, but not where it should be.

Also look at how much cleaner vehicle emissions are compared to the 70s, and holy hell look at side by side crash tests.

One of the many reasons hydrogen is so great, an electric vehicle with no battery

Today's hydrogen vehicles like the 2nd gen Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo have a battery as a buffer, presumably because the fuel cell can't handle the current draw at full throttle. Picture from Hyundai's site:

But really the battery should be considered a big ticket item, like the transmission in a combustion car. The batteries in Toyota hybrids have proven to be quite durable, with minimal range reduction after 10+ years.

The biggest drawback is the lack of recharging infrastructure for us off-roaders - can't practically charge up at the trail head, or carry additional fuel for longer trips like with jerrycans.

That battery looks more akin to the battery in our trucks than the battery in a Tesla

Hydrogen is great. Until it goes BOOM. It would be like disappearing into thin air.

    LET'S SET THIS STRAIGHT
Toyota tried every crash test imaginable and exceeded any force found while driving and could not puncture the bottles. They resorted to the US military's armor piercing round before they were able to puncture them.
    THERE WILL BE NO BOOM
