Hello everyone first post here. I wanted to see if there was anybody that came across the same issue when bringing their Tacoma in for the 3rd taillight recall. Basically, the stealership told me that while working on the recall they saw that one of the studs was broken. They said this was cost $800 to fix. Has anyone had this issue?

I figure the broken stud could be caused by corrosion which would then be a defect caused by a manufacturing issue due to the leaking light. A water leak could cause the stud to become corroded and weaker. Or I figured this stud was overtorqued causing it to break. It just seems like way too much of a coincidence that they found another issue with the taillight whil working on the recall.

Just wanted to hear everyone else's thoughts on this or if there is anyone else that has come across the same issue when bringing truck in for 3rd tailight recall.

    Cheers

Welcome to tw.... did you mention this site to the service writer?
Many have had to deal with a 3rd brake issue and stealership saying "you broke it".
It's a known issue on the 3rd gens, call the corporate office.

I did not mention the site. I first just kind of wanted to figure out how many others have had this happen. Just seems fishy.

Figured there could be lawsuits for this type of ordeal.

Dealers have tried to blame everything under the sun not to fix it... the recall should be enough, if not then call the corporate number and open up a case on the vin#.

The Dealer did not fool around with my 3rd Brake Light Assembly, all they did was glue a Trim Ring around it.

The dealership offer to fix my 3rd brake light after doing my fuel recall, I told them next time because my soft topper was in the way

I will definitely be giving corporate a call next week and opening a case. Thanks for the help.

It’s unbelievable the level of conning these dealerships are willing to go through to make profits. The greed disgusts me and at this point I find it hard to even want to buy another Tacoma from them or service my vehicle with them.

They are definitely trying to pass on the expense of a mistake their technician made. If the third brake light attachment stud was broke prior you would have had water intrusion problems.

You can get the brake light for $40 and do it yourself

That solution probably involves the least amount of stress too.

There's actually an updated part with a # that goes around the brake light, someone posted it in another thread. It's like a rectangle ring goes on the outside

The studs are part of the 3rd brake light . If they were already going to replace the brake light with the updated version , problem solved .

No studs for the 3rd taillight. The dealership was saying the left side stud was found broken when looking into the recall for leaking 3rd tailight.

So they didn’t even remove the interior panels when doing your 3rd taillight recall?

Not always, only if the interior has water intrusion. Otherwise they just glue a ring around the old light.

I don’t think they were going to replace the brake light. I think the recall more relates to one of the seals.

Correct, they just glued a trim ring on.
