Those plastic drain nipples that jam into the oil filter housing…

Is there an easier way to remove these, some thread in, but these have three prongs that snap into place, and I always have to forcefully break them off the housing, and I missing something? Is there an easier way?

 

I always stick that plastic piece into an empty bottle and then into the filter, gives good leverage plus the oil drains into the bottle.

 

The problem is that once that little plastic piece sticks into the oil filter housing, it snapped and locked in place and won’t come out, I’m trying to find out how to remove it from the housing

 

Remove them in shear. Not in tension. Put the nipple in the crook of your thumb, then wrap your index finger around the base of the filter housing (where the octagonal flats are) then squeeze.

 

I use that style, they just pop out for me..

 

Yup, just pull them at an angle not straight out.

 

Push up and pull. Like those real nipples

 

There’s no room to push up it’s seated flush, when I pull them out at an angle, they will pop out but it just takes a lot of force and the tabs break every time, just feels wrong the way I’m doing it

 

So I guess you’re just supposed to break the tabs?

 

I dont think so, they have always just come out in one peice. Couldn't pinpoint what I'm doing differently

 

Did oil changes on two 3rd gens this week.. that thing pops right out. Maybe it's different because you have a metal canister?

 

I stick a screwdriver into the opening where the oil drains out, and that gives plenty of leverage to pry it out easily.

You need to put a hose on it. I've used this one about 6 times.

This thing. I've never used the plastic thing. Bought this tool and a proper wrench for the housing before the first change.

 

Yup. I bought one of those after my first attempt with the plastic nipple. The messiest oil change ever, out of thousands on liters of oil I’ve changed. I had oil to one elbow, and the other armpit, and knew there had to be a better way. It’s a great tool.
