Has anyone solved the problem of rain running down the back of the Summit door when the door is open?

When opening the Summit while it’s raining, rain just poured into the bed of the truck between the top of the door and the camper.

Is there some type of gutter or seal to install there?

That’s simple, all you need is a drip edge. See if there is one that is adhesive?

 

It’s a huge gap. And the Summit door tilts upward, so rain just runs down into the bed.

I might be able to add a rain drip on the camper and another one inverted on the door. But I don’t know if that would be enough to fill the entire gap itself.

 

About 2 more months until I get to pick my Atlas up. Will be great to leave VT in the winter and head to AZ to pick it up. Will be an incredible drive back east then the interior build will start

@keith12 - you could mount a simple ribber rib, aluminum bar, etc at a slight diagonal across the back of the topper to channel runoff to one corner and not onto the rear hatch.

 

That would probably work for the water falling directly through the gap or running down the back of the camper, but the glass door also tilts upward, so it drains water into the bed, also.

Wow...I thought MY drive was going to be a long one (coming from Indiana)! I go out to AZ in April for my Summit and I think I'm looking forward to the TRIP as much as picking-up my new camper.

My daughter and I are going to hit some National Parks we were going to visit in Spring of 2020- then Covid hit and that plan was shelved...until now! I am curious to see what the gas mileage is with/without the camper, but I have a feeling I'm not really going to care.

Be safe on your trip and be sure to report how it goes! There's not as much traffic on the AT thread as some other campers(probably because AT owners are busy CAMPING) LOL!

 

Remember that some areas in the west will still have significant snow in April. Plan accordingly.

 

Thanks for the advice! We're going to take a southern route to avoid as many mountains as possible. Weather is one reason, but I wasn't super-impressed with the 4cyl performance last year in the Appalachian Mountains (and that was just me and my camping gear).

Once I have the camper on I will evaluate what the next steps are to improve performance(upgraded leaf springs, gearing, etc). The only thing I plan on doing BEFORE install is bed stiffeners- unless anyone with experience has some recommendations?

 

What leafs do you have now?

 

I'm on the factory leafs and even with just a couple hundred pounds of weight in the back to help with winter driving I feel they're pushing their intended purpose. I was thinking of some Deaver stage 2s(300-600#) if we incorporate a visit to LA since we'd already be 3/4 the way there.

AT told me they can do airbags at their shop, but I'm not sure for a topper I'm keeping mounted permanently that's the best option?

 

You’ll find many of us run bigger leafs and bags for when we are loaded.


I’m running OME with the

$77 D29XL Leaf Spring

D29XL leaf added and the primary overload flipped. Firestone bags and daystar cradles for when I have a load.

 

I've got a 3 leaf progressive AAL on my factory (2015) springs (with overload leaf) and Firestone air bags. When I touched the suspension I wasn't planning on doing an camper, I was just planning for occasional extra loads and additional lift with the 3 leaf AAL. The bags went in later to help out for camping since I normally sit level without a load and I'd start to sag slightly when loaded with camping gear + RTT. I'll probably upgrade the leaf springs to an HD set eventually, but so far this setup has worked fine for the AT, I just ride with a bit more air in the bags full time to maintain a rake.

 

I have a custom pack for the tacoma from deaver. it's for 1000+lbs. I already have a swingout and a the atlas on top.

I'm at 200-250 for the swing out and another 360 for the atlas. That only leaves me like another 300lbs for gear.

Another annoying thing is if you don't get your weights right and there's a rake, then you have to adjust your headlights.

 

I just got my habitat less than a month ago, 1st adventure was winter camping in the Gila mountains In New Mexico....It was crazy COLD 8 degrees at night, but the diesel heater kept me and the inside toasty at just around 60
