Anyone know if I can place a coleman propane burner directly on my tailgate or will it damage it?

 

Same here, I use mine on a flimsy plastic table with no heat issues.

You're going to have over 2' past the edge of the tailgate. The utility track ends about ~8" before that so you'll have about 3' of tent totally unsupported. The tent is 7' long so you'll have almost half of it just free hanging. I've seen it done before multiple times and it always looks like a terrible idea.

I would be worried about it breaking too from the additional stress on it. As far as the bars, I would get something made for the tacoma versus something universal.

I have a 5' bed as well and so far the roofnest condor is the only hardshell I could reasonably fit on there and remain below the roofline (5' long and 4' wide closed). A larger sleeping footprint than pop up/wedge style RTT's as well.

 

Yeah the only issue is Im out here buying a blemished RTT. If I wanted to spend that much I would have just gotten that one instead. I think Imma go with this rack. https://www.ebay.com/itm/194468255549

I don't know if this would impact your decision but right now Cali Raised has their racks on sale for new years. Comes out to about the same price if not cheaper than the ebay rack.

 

I saw it and was ready to pull the trigger, but it wont clear the cab.

 

So the tepui anti condensation mat and exped is turning out to be a better and better combo all the time. Having a narrower than stock mattress allows me to zip tie stuff to the anti condensation mat which has proved very handy. I zip tied the heater buddy base to it for added stability so I don’t have any worries of it tipping over. I won’t be sleeping with it on but it’s just an extra level of insurance if my gear isn’t enough this weekend. First trip with the insulated walls so I’m curious to see how much they help. I’ve previously been down to mid 20s with no heater but it’ll be low teens this weekend.

 

Brr cold is what we call that down here. I had the redneck idea to throw a moving blanket over the tent last time I camped in the 30s. It worked, kind of. I’d prefer a real liner. And great ideas on the zip ties. I place my little buddy heater on a metal cookie sheet but still isn’t as stable as I’d like.

 

That doesn’t sound like a terrible idea at all. This insulation is essentially a moving blanket sewed to fit the tent.

 

Has anyone ever had their pop up tent mounted like this for a prolonged period of time?



It doesn't look super awesome, but Im more of a practicability over looks kinda guy.

 

Looks like a lot of weight for the roof. What's the weight rating on the 3rd gens?

 

mine is mounted on a bed rack year round as the bed can support it but I am unsure the roof weight limits.

 

That will be pushing the limits of the roof its self if you use it for a while like that and also biggest down fall is that now you will have a massive air dam above your windshield. That will cost you several MPG if your driving any distance. I made the mistake of putting my basket up front and it overlapped the windshield a bit and with a table strapped to the front half of the basket I lost about 3 MGP and that had more space for the air to escape then your tent will.
