RSI Smart Cap

I literally bought extra and sealed every seam on the entire cap. top. Sides. It’s pretty water tight now. But should have been better from the factory.

 

How much did you put into the windows microsnook? Qualitatively was it: not much, fills the channel, whoa that's a lot, that might be too much, or bigger the gob the better the job?

 

Hmm. I can’t remember. I did use some in those clear/white tabs inside of the window frame and then re-inserted the tabs. Does that make sense?
I’m not sure exactly you’re referring to. also hard to recall exactly but I can look at it later if you need more help. Maybe some photos of what you’re mentioning would help me

 

Id have to go look at the slide to know what you mean by the "clear/white tabs" inside the frame. Where I figured my leak was coming (and saw water) from was the gasket to plastic of the sliding window that sealed the outside of the sliding windows to the inside of the gull wing glass. Essentially there is a square channel in the window frame that part of the gasket seats in... the earlier gasket design did not fill that channel and gave water a path around it with enough accumulation (it will always accumulate based on the design). New gasket design which RSI shipped to me was much thicker in this section.

The how to RSI sent me is a short video but I don’t know how to post vids in here. Basically they just remove the window than remove the gasket from the window apply a bead of black sealant around it than re install the gasket.

I haven’t had a chance to do it yet but will try it in the next couple days. Hopefully it fixes the leak.

 

yes, I also sealed my windows around the edges. Before they sent me the new gaskets. I think it still leaked when I had the old gaskets but the new ones work and my windows don’t leak anymore. When I go to the car wash and manually wash the truck, using the pressure washer, I don’t pull the trigger on the cap itself. This is so there isn’t extremely high water pressure working it’s way into the crevices. Instead I just hold the pressure washer without engaging the trigger so the water pressure is significantly less. The rest of the truck I’ll use full water pressure. This has seemed to help me out a lot with leaks.

How did you get new gaskets? Did you email/call them directly? Mine need to be replaced.

100% concur. Running the exact same on my EvoA. Also another narrower version from Wynex works but the version here is nice because you can control the degree the bag will open so it wont dump on you when the EVOa door is full open. Wired a USB hub from the outlet in the Taco bed with magnets on the EVOa door. All the camp gadgets charge in the Wyex pouches from the USB hub and never leave the truck.

 

I have the Gecko version but I feel like they are wired backwards in that the middle strip is wired such that its meant to be at the cab rear window instead of at the CAP rear window. I just wired the at the CAP window in the back anyway but it just meant fenagling a 'premium' purpose-built product.

 

I also have the gecko lights.
I purchased the red and white and ran them to a double pole, triple throw switch that’s wired directly from the battery to the small cubby in the bed.
So I can either have a lot of light or go stealth and not have a lot of bugs with the red. They’re bright lights and I added quick disconnects at the rear of the cap for when I need to remove it. Works really well. Had to do some soldering but I love that stuff. Great lights

Here is the exact switch I used.
Removing the cubby door allowed me to easily drill the required hole for the switch.

As far as the wiring(hard for me to recall it’s been months now), since it has on/off/on, the two power wires will attach to either ends of the switch and I believe the middle is ground. This all goes directly to the battery so you have power at any time. Takes a while to route it all under the truck, but it’s not rocket science.
I believe I split the power wires into two at the end and used one wire from the battery, all soldered together.
The ground is just one wire from batt negative to the middle prong.

I actually stopped working on these. I had concerns about the magnet coating degrading. If this coating is compromised, the magnets will rust and nobody wants to put a rusty magnet on their $4000 piece of metal they just bought. The off the shelf solution that has been offered here is hard to beat, and battle tested. RSI will send you some if you fill out a warranty claim for freezing locks.

 

Are you referring to the lock covers? You’re the maker of these?
I was looking forward to a set but after reading this will not buy them if they rust.
Just got a propane torch and will use that when my locks freeze. Which won’t happen if I’m careful.

 

Yeah I was working on some. I wanted to create a product that would last the life of the truck/cap. They worked fine for me, but I had my doubts about them holding up long-term. RSI is sending me some of the rubber covers which i plan on installing.
