I have a 21 2.7 and stumbled across this mod removing the intake elbow from the inside fender well. I was wondering if anyone else had done this and what were the results. Also what is the reason for this pipe, i noticed the 3.5 does not have it was curious why its only on the 2.7.

I removed mine and replaced it with a TRD Air Flow Accelerator. Cheap part under $10.

the accelerator fit on the 2.7 intake box? I know it’s slightly different but I figured the same I might be able to use the air accelerator off the 3.5

Pretty sure all this does is draw air from the fender, which is considerably cooler air than the air under the hood. The large box attached to it is probably just a baffle to keep the noise down from the intake draw.

I believe toyota calls this an intake resonator and its to reduce noise. Im planning on removing mine at some point in the next few days. My truck is supercharged so im thinking this has to be a restriction with the way it necks down and has the 90* bend

It bottlenecks the incoming air and sends to resonator, therefore making it quieter. I removed mine. Best thing to do with 10 minutes of time.

I removed mine (was installing a snorkel the week after), didn't notice any increase in noise.

This is what the other side looks like. I don't think the tube (circled in green) is part of the engine intake airflow. I haven't messed with mine and don't plan to, got this image from the internet.

As the air comes in the intake pass, some of the air is taken into that little pipe and into the large plastic bit

There is the entry for the air diverter thing.

You can see the small hole for the pipe mentioned by DGXR above that leads into the plastic “box”

To be honest, no. There is a little bit more intake noise as you climb the revs

Just get rid of it… unnecessary hardware that does absolutely nothing for performance of the vehicle. Call it Stage 1 weight reduction.

I pulled it out today just a fyi for anyone looking to do the same, just cut the head off the factory push pin style clips in the fender liner they are a pain to get out. I was able to cut the heads off toyota's stupid panel clips, unbolt the few screws on the front half and just bend the fender liner down to pull out the intake silencer. It pulls right out no hardware to fuss with, I then picked up a box of universal push pins from harbor freight to replace the ones i cut. I notice almost no increase in noise would recommend anyone with a 2.7 to just pull it out.

Seems like throttle response is a tick better i haven't put enough miles on it to really tell, I also just removed the charcoal filter and replaced the paper filter with an afe

I did that as well and it works great, paired with the equal length header from LCE, the truck comes to life a bit.
