ADS Off-Road Racing Shocks - Information, Pictures, & BS Thread

I thought about trying that. I will definitely have too and get back to you

 

The rest of my kit should be arriving soon, does anyone wish they would have spent a little extra and had their shocks adjusted with a lighter valving from ADS? Or do you like the way they ended sitting?

 

I have an older 4Runner, but I've thoroughly enjoyed how they were valved out of the box. They were noticeably smoother than the Bilsteins and OMEs I've had in the past on road, and they're a whole different experience off road. Everyone seems to like their suspension/valving differently though so take this with a grain of salt.

 

Thanks for the input, i'll probably just leave it as is, I'm 100% sure the guys at ADS know more then me! I just have to much curiosity... and to much time.

 

Valving is all personal preference. I thought mine were super soft and added quite a bit of compression valving and a bit more rebound to how they came from ADS.

Run them for a bit, see how they perform, and get them revalved later if you're not happy with them.

 

I think that's solid advice, thanks for the input, I think i'll do just that.

 

Help needed. I’ve got some ADS piggybacks on my rear axle. Love the shocks but have encountered a problem. My driver’s side shock is making contact with a bracket on the OEM leaf pack and scarring it up pretty good.

Question for anyone who has these shocks or feels they know the answer: does the resi on the driver’s side face to the front or rear of the truck?

Any help is appreciated.

 

The resi should be on the low side of the shock. It faces different directions on each side.

To keep the resi from contacting the leaf pack... tighten the upper nut until the shock body can no longer rotate on its own.

 

So this is how I have mine setup (same as yours). This is looking from the rear of the truck. Here’s the hits I’ve been taking:


You can see where the bracket on the leaf pack was hitting. These have been on about a year with no issue. Top nut is tight. Was bombing down 30 miles of washboard and potholes at about 20-35 mph when this happened. Not sure what to do.

 

If the top nut is fully tightened and the shock body still rotates, I'm not sure there's anything you can do. Your upper rubber bushings may be worn out and in need or replacement. That certainly sucks and is a common problem with piggy backs.

 

I pushed the resi back out of the way once I noticed it. Took some effort. I’ll check tightness again tonight. They’re so pretty and work so well. I kinda wanna cry.

 

Get @CBoy808 to design a custom "wrap" for it... cover up the damage. I wanted to wrap mine to look like beer cans...

ADS certainly makes a great looking shock and it sucks to see them get marked up. But at least it's not something that will affect performance.

 

Just got my fronts! There is a very fine print on the outside of the cardboard box saying "shocks are shipped without nitrogen, fill to 150."

I haven't seen anywhere else here of other peoples shipping without nitrogen? I contacted Headstrong, they said ADS has shipped them like this forever. Glad I caught it.. Hopefully a heads up for other people incase you didnt know like me.

Yeah that. I don’t recall mine saying that. You would think Headstrong would advertise this clearly. I purchased through them.

 

Bought mine through HS (3 years ago)... no note on mine.

 

If that’s true than I’ve ran mine almost 20k miles with no nitrogen. I still have my box and it doesn’t say that

 

Right. It must be that this is a new thing for them. If I had no nitrogen for the past 8k miles, then my truck shouldn't perform as good as it has been off-road!
