Can we have a caliber discussion? I'm looking at subcompact pistols. 9mm, 40 cal, 357 Sig.

We all know 9mm, todays bullets expand and do way more damage then just a decade ago.

The necked down 10mm, good everything, really. Prices, availability, choice of rounds is nearly endless.

357 Sig, I need help here, great round, hits hard, again a shortened and necked down 10mm? High price for the power, and when you can find them.

I'm new in here, and my small pistol affliction is new also. Just now getting a CCW, and looking at daily carry all of a sudden. IWB holsters are uncomfortable for me, will have to get used to that. So, I'll have to try like 50 of them to find something I like. The little pistols I'm eyeballing are the G43X, G27, and the G33, 9mm, 40 cal, 357 Sig respectfully.

Not trying to derail the Glock fan base thread :crapstorm:and without getting into caliber discussion, the HK VP9SK and P30 are worth mentioning for subcompacts. Both have very nice trigger action.

Personal opinion after having carried a .40 for around 10 years

9mm is the way to go...even in today's climate, the ammo is cheaper and more manageable for follow up shots than either 40 or 357 auto...40 is a strange kind of snappy recoil and honestly the 27 was my least favorite Glock ever to shoot...if you don't like shooting it you're not likely to practice like you should

43x will be way easier to carry than a 27 or 33

9mm, that way you can afford more ammo and practice shooting more. I have owned a couple .40s before, everyone is different, but I shoot a 9mm or 45 much better that the .40. A pistol is just to get you to your rifle anyhow.

Just to piggy back off of what people are already saying, modern terminal ballistics have grown much quicker in the last 12 years than the prior 30. So, with that being said, I prefer the 9mm 147grain and if you can find it, Speer gold dot. Use it before and have phenomenal results. Also take a gander at FBI statistics over the past 50 years, and compare to lucky gunner results for gelatin and see what you want for yourself.

It used to be 40 was good for light barrier defeat while maintaining terminal ballistics and penetration. Modern 9mm has often been on par or better than 40 and 45 (expandable rounds compared to ball for 45)

    https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#9mm

If you really get into the weeds, just take a step back and know the companies that make quality ammo in the caliber you want matched with the size of your pistol and you're hard pressed to make a bad decision.

I will say, you should shoot a magazine or two of your defense ammo compared to ball. Example is my 124 grain in a sig p365 hits harder being a p+ than my 115 grain ball winchester used for target practice. Same with my glock 19 shooting 147gr Speer gold dot vs 115 gr winchester.

Excellent replies, thank you. I asked a caliber question over on Glocktalk, it exploded into chaos, lots of strong opinions on this caliber selection in self defense situations. The 9mm has come a long way in the wound cavity area, that's the stopper right there, big holes bleed out faster. I'm just looking at things I've never looked at in guns before, my how times change.....

You should see rifle caliber and weight "discussions." Takes a really aggressive turn for no reason.

Though if you do find yourself chasing that dragon, check out the applied ballistics app for phones. It's 20 bucks and has all the knowledge you'd want.

Just enough to look kinda cool.
Moral of the story is find what you shoot best and get that, go to a range and ask to rent the 3 different calibers. IWB feels weird the first time you carry but after a while you get used to it and not having it feels like your missing something. And practice practice practice. Caliber doesn’t mean crap if you don’t hit your target.

No matter what I buy, it's always magazines and ammo up next, then shoot, shoot, shoot. Practice is the one thing to make muscle memory real.

I used to play the caliber game. About 5 years back, I stopped and focused on my ability to maintain proficiency, practice regularly (cost of training), and availability of ammo. Ultimately, I would love to run 10mm across the board. Like 45, I am to muscle 10mm to obtain the desired goal, but like 45, cost has held me back. I pay very close attention to a number of factors; FBI's switch to 9mm, reported ballistics of the FBI's choice rounds and my military background with 9mm. Lethality of the modern 9mm carry round has gone up astronomically. The ability to bring the 9mm round back on target to deliver repeated hits is substantially easier than 45 or 10mm. Finally the cost to train is reasonable enough that even the beginner can manage to obtain reasonable proficiency.

My collection of handguns and PPCs are centered around 9mm for all the reasons previously mentioned. I still have nostalgia pieces in other calibers, but they are not my working handguns. The thing I do not understand is the focus on barrel length? All of the micro handguns focus on a short barrel with the shortest possible mag well, while still retaining reasonable capacity. Don't get me wrong....I still have a P365XL. To date, the best of all worlds, from the factory, is the glock 19. You get warfighter level capacity at 15+1 and a decent barrel length to maintain ballistics. Honestly, the best of all worlds would be a 19 with a 17 slide; you would get better ballistics and improved accuracy, while getting a better slide length to help increase retention and aid in concealability. I have only seen one aftermarket company focus on this concept (Suarez International).

Bottom line is this when it comes to rounds: I carry what the FBI carries for rounds. One....they do the research. That research is backed up by civilian sources (Lucky Gunner). Finally, god forbid, if I ever have to use it, my ammo choice is easy to defend in court.

DISCLAIMER: These are all just personal opinions of a Glock/SIG P320 fanboy.

    Hey TW,
I'm a glock 19 owner with Inforce APLc. Recently bought a battle belt from G-code and looking to upgrade OWB holster. I'm considering competing in these tactical games and need a solid platform to drawl from. Nothing too serious yet just getting more range and practice time. Anyway before buying anything new i wanted to check with this community for a safariland, gcode, trex, etc for sale. leaning towards SL for the retention lock but open to anything.

I like the SL's as well.
I have a buddy that really likes his Dara setups for 3 gun shoots. They have a lot of config options...

I carry 9mm it’s effective today as already been stated and way affordable compared to the bigger calibers. I’ve got a 43x it’s the perfect carry gun for me it has just about every Bolt-on imaginable besides the trigger and it’s an OZ lighter than a 19. I run this thing hard at the range and it keeps wanting to be fed.
Holsters are even finicky I stumbled upon a company called FourBrothers I like the setup it’s comfy. Also depending on your build check out LLOD I had a holster of his super pricey but never felt heavy with a previous setup.

I keep wanting to try one of his triggers . I have a setup in a g41 a local guy did for me , and I haven’t been able to replicate it with anything off the shelf or working on setups on my own . The guy did a killer job . But I’ve almost gone back to basically stock on all my others .

So my recently purchased G29sf, 2 weeks old. I've read everything that came with it, looked on GT, and I'm unsure what Gen my pistol is, anyone? Thanks.
