Does anyone know when the DNX8120 first came out and what version of Garmin maps are preloaded on the unit? I know that the 2009 version came out a short while back and I am trying to understand if the unit I am looking to buy will already have the updated maps or I would need to buy an update from Garmin.

I don't know which map version I'm running (I can try to check later if it's in the "software version" information) but I just bought mine about two weeks ago. I know there is a new part of a highway that I take everyday that isn't on the map, but it's less than a year old. Google Maps just put it up in the last couple of months...

I would appreciate it if you could check the version. I am sure it is in the menu somewhere, but havent had my hands on one of these units so I cant really direct you there. This isnt a deal breaker, I would just like to have the latest version as it has been out a while and Garmin isnt necessarily cooperative with these types of things. I base that on my past history with them.

I got mine about 2 months ago and when I was looking at upgrading the map I found that the upgrade from Garmin was making bricks out of the units. I decided to live with it. Garmin may have gotten this resolved (I would hope after 2 months). I would be interested in knowing as well. However, be sure they got this fixed before you try to upgrade.

If you register the unit, Garmin provides free updates for a certain period of time.

In that case I would press the manufacturers for resolution or replacement of a working unit - you aren't getting what you paid for.

I kind of agree with this - they provide free updates to the current major version, but, not necessarily a free update to the next major version. I cant imagine the update process is very different with this unit vs a typical GPS they sell. I know that if you bought a regular GPS and it came with, say, "City Navigator North America NT 2008" they would provide updates to that version free. But, "City Navigator North America NT 2009" has been out for a while and to upgrade to this version it is $99 on their website. I know it depends on the timing and how much you push Garmin, but, just wanted to check this before jumping in.

Thanks a lot for the update warning as well. I cant decide how to purchase this unit. I can find a wide range of pricing from $900-$1600.
