That's about the only spot I've thought of that'd be handy without being on the dash for everyone to see. Did you little self tapping screws to mount it?

    Yeah.
I did use the included screws, and it seems to be holding very well. It's been over some pretty rough terrain in CO several times. That new unit looks quite a bit bulkier, though, might need a bit more solid of a mount. The mic mount tape that comes with the unit didn't last too long, I replaced it with good 3M tape.

If all you're going to do is use the radio to talk within your trail group, 15 watts has proven to be plenty. We get miles of pretty clear reception. However, if you plan to use the repeater network much, the higher wattage units are night to day better than the lower wattage units. I can hit my nearest repeater some of the time, but the traffic I hear on the repeater channel are from users that have the 45 (soon to be 50) watt units. I have the 275 and when I try to talk to the repeater, it just gets frustrating because I'm always hearing I'm fuzzy or garbled from those I'm trying to talk to. Not worth it for me to upgrade, but for a new user than can and wants to drop the bucks, I would say get highest wattage you can afford.

I'm also interested in what the jump from 15 to 50 watts gives you and if it's worth upgrading. I have the 275 and like the controls on the mic. Mostly just use it to talk to other vehicles close by. Also wondering about the antenna. I have the Midland 6 dB gain antenna, but don't know how much that adds to the strength of the unit.

A lot of farmers over here in NEA have gmrs radios in their trucks, and most all of them run the higher gain antenna since it's pretty flat land. The higher the db gain, the flatter the signal radiation - more horizontal, less vertical. So it may not help much in the hills. There's a lot more experience in this thread than what I have too, and I'm sure they'll chime in if all that's wrong.

NEA is currently working on a light dusting right now. It's pleasant, but there is a part of me that wants to run those Cooper's through some 18" drifts again:burnrubber: Maybe soon....

I'm sure some of y'all are members of the Arkansas GMRS Repeater Group.

This latest post about having repeaters linked with Google Assistant is mind-blowing.

Where's that posted? Neat that they got Google assistant linked, bummer that a group moderator would post illegal equipment being used.

I removed it from my phone in November and didn't check it for a solid month. Logged in on my desktop to quit every political, shitposting, and political shitposting group I belonged too. Then I unfollowed every other group I belong too, guess I'd rather go looking for info than being bombarded with notifications. Now I just need to weed out my friends list down to people who are like actually my friends.

Hey everyone. My girlfriend, pup and I are planning a 3 week CO/UT/AZ trip this June from NC and it's looking like Arkansas is going to be a good day 2 spot to stop and camp. I was considering Ozark National Forest, just wondering if any of you had any other recommendations? Looking for some mild trails and secluded camp spot. Thanks in advance, pic for attention!

Asked similar question (maybe not as clear...) two or so weeks back. Look a page back and you will find some recommendations. Hope this helps and I hope more people chime in...

    Yeah.
Assuming you are coming through on I-40? Best options would be to head north on either 7, 21, or 23 into the ONF. Kind of depends on your timing coming through. From any of those highways there is access to a wide range of groomed county gravel roads, and the occasional FS road. Avoid the FS roads with 5 digits, though, lol -- they are usually better suited to 4-wheelers and SxS vehicles. Plenty of dispersed camping, but lots of small sections of private property as well.

If you head up 7 to Sand Gap and take a left on 123, then another left on Indian Creek Rd (Google has it as 1808, but their numbers never seem to match anything), there are good sites right along the creek after you drop down a ways. That's one of my favorite drives so far and not hard to find. You can weave your way back to I-40 going southwest from there, or head back up and take 123.

I'll second Indian Creek Road. It's not too long of a drive, is decent enough for a stock vehicle but still interesting, and has some good spots to stop. It can get a little crowded depending on time of the year though.
