That is interesting. Just to be sure here, was this 85w-140 pure synthetic?

I had a Mazda that I had to shift from 1st to 3rd on cold mornings because it just would NOT go into 2nd. At all.
I say cold, but it was South Texas, so cold was only getting close (around 35F). I changed over to Amsoil and the next morning I not only shifted into 2nd, but I could do so using just 2 fingers on the lever. That was so damn dramatic! And nothing else was changed (just the gear lube), but it was going from petroleum oil to synthetic (same viscosity numbers on the bottle).

No, its non-synthetic, they didn't put synthetic in it now as it will get dumped after the 500-mile break in period. I was just noting that it does make a difference if its petro oil. And also, this was a SoCal chilly morning so not very cold either, but I could still feel the difference from when I started the vehicle and after driving it around for a few minutes.

Can be night & day difference sometimes.
And I have to give them kudos for not using synthetic as a break-in oil! It truly is too good of a lube and would prevent any high-spots from wearing down & seating properly in a timely manner. Good on them.

Toyota calls for that to allow for true ignoramuses to operate their vehicles. They have to prepare for the lowest common denominator behind the wheel (& wrench).

They do it for fleet MPG. Most people have never seen or heard of 75W- anything, let alone 75W-85. Some DIYers have at least seen 75W-90 in parts stores. Toyota should have kept it 75W-90.

Yes, Amsoil is a legal MLM model. You had no idea, because it's not some scam. 50 years in business. I am retired from the corporate world and I will say Amsoil is more ethical or at least just as ethical as any company I ever worked for.

No it is NOT a pyramid scheme for several reasons. First of all endless pyramid schemes are illegal and are not about selling products. A quick example: Any starting Amsoil dealer makes a sale, if this was a pyramid, the very first person ever would get a cut, correct? But this doesn't happen. Amsoil only has three levels. Pretty much less than a lot of organizations. Amsoil is about the products and selling the products, not signing people up endlessly. Of course it costs a nominal paperwork fee to sign up to be a dealer ~$50, for all the books and courses. That doesn't prove it's a pyramid scheme. And dealers do get small fee, $10, for signing up new Preferred Customers, but again these are customers being signed up, not new dealers.

Never trust a car dealership to change your oil especially if you engine requires 0w20 because most add 5w30 without you knowing it because it’s cheaper

Reviving an old thread since I just decided to go Amsoil for front/rear diffs, TC, and engine oil for my soon-to-be 60K (2019) Tacoma. In the end I decided Amsoil is the most protective product out there and, while expensive versus many excellent alternatives, these cost differences are ultimately insignificant (for me) when factored against annual fuel costs. At least that's how I'm viewing it presently.

I’m swapping in 85 140 Dino oil this weekend. ECGS recommended and it’s time for me to change. Figured I’d give it a shot.

But to stay on topic I was going to use severe gear until I saw it was 30 bucks a quart. No chance it’s that much better than other brands.

Maybe I’m not in the cool kids club but for the severe gear all I found was 40 bucks a qt. Which like I said, isn’t the worth the cost compared to competitors. And if you do have join some club to get those prices that’s even more of a reason not use them.

I’ve been using Costco Kirkland synthetic motor oil
05-30w in my current 2006 4.0 Taco with no ill effects. I plan on using it in my new Taco as well. My Costco has 02-20w 2 5qt jug case for 38.95 plus 12 1qt case for 42.95

I've got a an old motocross buddy that operates a private auto parts business here as they're also an amsoil dealer. There's gotta be big profits in their lubricants as I can buy amsoil for quite a bit less at his shop than others. Its the same with spectro lubricants, it's all good products.

He's selling at or near his cost. Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, I get it, but there's still an awful good profit to made vs other similar products out there. Like I mentioned with spectro lubricants being similar. Depending on the shop selling their lubricants, you can buy the same exact stuff for half what some are selling it for. Years ago it was worth it to take a 20 mile ride when you knew what this shop was selling the same products at.
