Body Control Module

I'm one of the idiots who swapped out his interior lights for LED's and fried my Body Control Module.

Has anyone ever actually had one swapped out? All I've been able to find are warnings of how much it costs and then the thread ends there. I know it sounds like a crazy thing to consider, but has it been done?

 

I did a quick search on the googler and it looks like they are about $300-$400.

 

You can probably swap it out yourself, but you're gonna need someone to program your Vin, etc. into it.

This is sorta what I was wondering. Was doing some research and it appeared that some units (this was on a Camry I think..) was just swap and go as long as it was the right model number. Trying to hear from someone who knows for sure that it’s gotta be programmed.

Having trouble with my headlights staying on bright no matter position of the stalk. Changed the stalk/multi switch, checked relays, bulbs, wiring and everything checked out. Suspect it’s the BCM. Took it to the Dealership and you can only get a new one from them $900. Only Toyota can program it $900. Just had it at the dealership last month for abs module and it’s the same way. Only Toyota can get the new module and only Toyota can program it! $2100 total!

Wow changing the interior lights to led will cause all of these issues? I guess I’m glad I haven’t swapped my interior bulbs to led. Is this the case even if you use the meso lights ?

 

It can if you don't disconnect the battery when you swap the bulbs. The lights are switched on the ground side so even with the switch off the socket is still hot. If you accidentally short the hot side to ground while changing bulbs then, if you're lucky, you blow the fuse and if you're not lucky you get to spend a lot of money on a new BCM.

It's best to disconnect the battery when doing any electrical work on these trucks.

 

Yeah it's dumb, but they are the easiest big ticket items to steal and part out. Still is a big problem with freightliner as well, as in the semis. Four torx bolts and the ECU is just hanging there behind a panel. And so car companies make it so no one can just simply replace the modules.

Fun thing is, they don't prevent the thefts in the first place at all, and now you pay a tech for an hour of work that takes less than 10 minutes to do without even turning a wrench if you source a module yourself.

 

After you disconnect the battery is there any amount of time you should wait before swapping the bulbs out ?

 

Just the time it takes to walk from up front where the battery is to where the lights are.

 

I bought a set of those interior led lights got the one in the vanity done and they are bright but a little skeptical about the one for the rear light as they say that if you put them in wrong you will blow something so I guess I stopped and waiting to hear from someone who has done them and read this post and glad I quit before doing any damage. Not installing the rest.I would rather be safe than sorry.
