Well Toyota starting using some really low friction rings to help with gas mileage so its not a total shock.

My truck gets utterly atrocious gas mileage, yet despite having over 143K miles it runs like new! I'm beginning to think that's not a coincidence!

I think today many things get overlooked now for the sake of increasing MPG.

I do not trust small turbocharged 4-bangers; I heard of such an engine in a Chevy Trax being replaced at 70K miles because the head gasket blew; And for a time Ford made a 3-cylinder Ecoboost...

Sounds like the next Colorado/Canyon and Tacoma are all getting turbo 4 bangers too, plus l doubt the Tacoma will have a MT anymore either.:(

Yeah but did it always? I still think you could do better with monitoring

I'd trust the tried and true..like the old Saab ones, those were decent. And 70K yeah that's about the time my GM popped the head, NA though

Yet another for the list of why not to buy a Bowtie

The 4.3 was a reliable marine and bus engine built by the droves and used for decades. It’s was really quite stout and efficient for it’s time…..

    Yup….
It depends upon which variant. The one I bought with a British Leland motor sucked. When they made their own, they were better. But they stopped selling for a reason. They kept repair shops busy under the guise of being a safe care. They were very safe till federal mandates made them all as safe. Then reliability became their issue and down fall.

Yup. It all, depended upon who made them. We had two Chevy GOE Prisms built beside the Corolla in Fremont Calif. Needless to say, they were just as reliable as the Toyota badge. ;) Only because they were made by them. The only part donated by GM was the radiator which had to be replaced at 109k on its way to 250 k of reliable miles.

You reminded me of something that happened on here back in late 2015 early 2016 when the 3rd Gen came out. Someone did a Toyota document dump at posted all kinds of specs and info on the truck and it's systems. It had all kinds of interesting information but one particular item caught my eye and caused a little concern. Under "Expected Service Life" under the engine sections it had 160K Miles. Shortly after they were posted all of those documents were scrubbed from the net, have never been able to find them again.

A member here on TW just had his 2016's 3.5L shit the bed with no warning; It had either 120K or 150K miles, I forget, but my truck is at 143K right now and shows no signs of slowing down. Honestly, and no offense to you, I have reservations about buying a 3rd Gen right now...

Well, you're better off with 4WD in Costa Rica; How hard is to bring a vehicle from Canada or the USA to Costa Rica, anyway?

There have been a few failures where the rod comes thru the side of the block.

And is that the fault of neglectful owners or poor quality control by Toyota?

Not exactly sure why that has been happening, doesn't seem like abuse either.

I never abused mine, but Toyotas used to have a reputation for being unkillable and continuing to run and drive great even when basic routine maintenance was neglected; Now, my friend's dad had to put a new engine in his 2013 RAV4 at less than 120K miles!

I think the older Toyota's were overbuilt and underpowered and could really stand up to abuse. Modern stuff revolves around meeting MPG standards so probably not going to be quite as durable in the long run.
