It can absolutely lock up, even in 2wd if you blew your spiders or gears. If you can get a cheap parts store cv/spare cv you can run it like this for months without needing to drop the diff at all.

I actually now carry a kit like this ever since I blew my spiders wheeling.

Oh it does? I thought that was the 4 prong nut on the back of the hub that did that. Unless thats only for 2wd and manual hubs?

all 4wd spindles are the same in that the CV holds the back side of the wheel bearing into the spindle. Difference between manual hubs and ADD is the hub itself which manual hubs have like 25 spline vs 26 spline ADD.

Prerunners have a dust cap on the back which covers a nut and sort of a washer thing that holds the bearing in I believe.

But yes, important to know I think. You won't make it very far if you try and drive without CVs installed. Basically the rotors between the calipers will be whats keeping your wheel on at that point.

I do have an old part's store CV, but only one. I located a salvage yard dif in Billings. I should be able to swap it out in the next few days. I think I will take a chance and just leave it for now, and drive it as little as possible.

Hmmm, I drove a good 3-4 months last year with no CV in while I was waiting on a replacement inner bearing and didnt have any issues. Comparing the prerunner hub/bearing to the manual hub setup they look the exact same, the manual hub just has a hole going all the way through the hub for the CV.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

This is correct. Prerunner is the same as manual hub. (Meaning the retainer nut and spacer are the same)

ah cool. DIdn't know that. I take it your manual hubs then? I know on ADD hubs you could definitely not drive it for even a day haha

I meant to say you only need to do the drivers side as that is the only one that spins the diff in 2wd. The passenger side is disconnected via the ADD.

Correct im on manual hubs. I knew 2nd gen 4wds needed a CV to keep the wheel bearing together but I assumed ADD hubs were the same as mine in that aspect.

OK. One question, how did you get the wheel end of the CV apart? Or did you just cut the shaft off?

Cut the shaft as close to the bearing cage as possible. You can kinda see the shaft a little bit in the first pic I sent.

One of the first things I did after buying this truck was replace both blown CV's (oem green sticker) and threw them straight in the trash, I've kicked myself multiple times for not saving at least one of them for a spare. Hell I even gave myself a black eye taking one of them out the day before my wedding. Luckily we had a great photographer who worked her voodoo magic and made it disappear in all the pictures.
