What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

With 315,000 miles on them I just figured they had served their purpose. I get tired of hanging on to things "just in case" and usually prefer the open space

 

well it only cost $20 a CV to rebuild them..and the OEM ones don't bind as fast. They are worth holding on to for sure. But too little too late i know.

 

I found my notes, I bought both ends and spliced em together.

Cut the grey one off this harness (it's what I had since I was gonna GM alt swap originally)...

Yeah, McGeorge is cheaper but when you add shipping (and Tax maybe), it's not.

 

OK, got it done. I had an old parts store CV that pulled off my truck a few years ago because it had torn a boot. I took it apart to see if it was OEM, and if it was I was going to reboot it. It was not, but for some reason I didn't throw it away. Lucky that.

 

What did you use to cut it?

Damn! I feel your pain. I have a sunroof, and when I got my truck the PO had a pile of old floor mats and this one odd cover I couldn’t figure out what it was…. So I threw it out think it was just random junk this guy had in the bed of the truck.. 2 months later in the summer I realized it was the sunroof cover…. That is pure 1st gen gold sitting somewhere in a landfill..

 

Cutoff wheel on an angle grinder. I'll give the part I cut off to a friend that makes knives. Probably good knife steel. I know he made some good ones out of my sway bar, and old leaf springs.

 

What did folks use to paint the inside of the frame after boxing in the rear section?

it's holding up very well. Went on easy. Dry time was good. I am very happy with it. So much so I used the satin version to paint the rebuilt RTT rack and bed platform I just recently finished.

 

Something is not right. I took it for a test drive and every once and a while I hear grinding noise. Doesn't do it all the time, and I never got above 20 mph. I jacked up and spun both front wheels, one at a time, and couldn't reproduce the noise.

Manual hubs, right?

Have you done anything in the manual hub bodies lately? If the brass (maybe bronze) bushing ring in the center, held by the snap ring on the outside is not properly greased, it will make a whirring noise every so often.

That bronze ring is what rides around the non-spinning manual axles (when the hubs are unlocked). If it's not lubricated properly, and the CV shaft is not lubricated with grease where it passes through that ring, it can make that whirring sound when the stationary axle shaft slows it down when you hit a bump or hit the brakes, because the bushing can rub on the shaft where it passes through the bushing.

That one can be a difficult noise to narrow down, if you're not looking for it.

 

hm that could lead it to mean its the Stub shaft in the ADD tube possibly. sadly only way to know that is to drop the diff and pull the tube.

 

Not manual, ADD.

 

If you’re going to go to all that trouble, why not pull the CV outer end and cut the cup, bearing cage, and shaft end all off? Less rotating mass hanging off your wheel bearing, and that grinding noise you hear might be the shaft flopping around with nothing to keep the bearings from rotating.

I keep these with me at all times for a similar situation to yours, pretty easy to make considering how far you’ve already gone.

How is the manual hub different than the ADD spindle to where you don't have to put an axle stub in there to prevent it from blowing up?
