Monday morning Shannon got a phone call from a 1800 number associated with our bank (bb&t now Truist). They said there was a suspicious charge and need to shut down her card. It seemed a little odd but not completely. I called our local branch while Shannon was on the phone and they said it was probably their online fraud department. As soon as Shannon got off the phone someone wire transferred all our money out of the 3 accounts we hold with the bank. I noticed this immediately and called the bank and closed everything. Shannon spent 4-6 hours on hold trying to reach the fraud department because the branch couldn’t spend hours on hold trying to get through to them. Next morning Shannon goes into the bank and they say “good news, we were able to stop the transfer”. They gave her a check for the amount that was in our accounts and she went and deposited in our other bank. 45 minutes ago bbt branch manager called us and said we owe them all the money back because they weren’t actually able to stop the transfer.

Nope. It's yours now. Besides. It's fraud, they're insured.

Exactly what I told them. I put it here for record. They are planning on charging me overdraft fees and dinging my credit.

Yea, the 1800 that called Shannon wasn’t the bank. They asked for the email tied to an account and the ein number. With that info they started doing something that trigger security codes to come to my phone. Shannon thinks the guy used to work for the bank and knew the system

Oh wow. So your bank handed that right to them. Hooray to them.

Yea, and at 4:30pm today the branch manager, who admittedly just found out about all this, calls Shannon and says our account is in the negative for the total amount stolen and needs the money back. When she asked how they gave us a check for an account with a $0 balance 24 hours after the money had been stolen, he said it was too late in the day for him to call anyone at the bank to find out why.

I think thier insurance covers this. The manager is probably getting pressured to recover it and not have the bank report it.

Oh man, sorry to hear about that you guys. I really hope they sort it out. Seems to me insurance would cover that since it's clearly fraud. Isn't that what FDIC insurance is for?
