My 2006 Tacoma just hit 200k miles. Yay! I must say that it has given me very little trouble in all these years, so kudos to Toyota for making such a fine vehicle.

I noticed my Check Engine light came on shortly after I hit 200k. Are there things to take care of at 200k, or should I just wait until she hits 201,000 for her regular 30k Mile tuneup?

It’s up to you. The the engine light itself doesn’t come on unless there is a problem. Whether the problem is big enough to address, is up to you.

If you have a scanner, pull the codes and see what it says. If you don’t, I don’t think it’s going to hurt to wait 1,000 miles until you take it in for the maintenance.

Let us know what the codes are and we can give better advice on the severity of the problem causing the CEL.

The CEL is exhaust oxygen sensor.

Might just need a new gas cap for the check engine light.

Thanks for the replies. So the Check Engine light doesn't come on automatically at 200k? That's an odd coincidence then.

I replaced the gas cap about a year ago (after I paid a chunk for my mechanic to diagnose the last Check Engine problem) so it's probably not that. I'm not driving her much these days, working from home now and all, so it'd take me a while to put on another 1000 miles. Maybe I better take her on in for a checkup.

If the replaced gas cap was an aftermarket, it could very well be that, again. But, don't guess, put a code reader on it. (So engine light came on last time and you still thought it was normal for it to come on at 200K?) It's the maintenance light that would have come on at 200K.

Oh man, is my face red. It’s not the Check Engine light that came on, it’s the Maintenance Required light. Doh!

So what maintenance is due at 200k that wouldn’t better be done at 201k?

    Nothing.

It's nothing but a 5k clock since it was last reset. Was your last oil change 5k ago?

I'm assuming you meant to type 210K. That would be your 7th 30K service.

Yes, 5k since the last oil change. Guess I might as well have all the next batch of 30k service done to celebrate this landmark occasion, huh?

Yeah, 210k. I'm about as good at math as I am at reading dashboard lights. :/
