Im looking for a Tacoma TRD Sport or Off Road with less than 40K miles, ive talked to every dealer between New Orleans and Dallas (all 48 of them) and just cant figure out the reasoning on the prices for some of these things, got quoted 32K for a 11' Access Cab Off Road in Shreveport 26K for a 11' DC Sport in Dallas and a 09 DC Sport with 25K miles at 28K in Houston. Whats a fair price for a Tacoma around 40K miles?

    Condition?
    Miles?
    Options?
    Service record?
Model type sales history per region?

Each variable creates a different final price thus the confusing oddities. And they said there wouldn't be any math. Sounds like you are having some fun and frustration with it and I wish you the best.

I am searching for the same rig...but I am in SC and working west. This is what I have seen: 2010-2011 DC 4wd TRD (Off Road or Sport) new is $27,800-29,100.

The few 2007-2009 TRD DC 4wd I have found go very quick and are selling for $20-23k. Kind of pushing me toward new which is what I don't want to do.

just a thought, often your interest rate on buying used is higher than when buying new, if that is the case, compare the interest rate difference over the term between new at $29K and used at $23K. YMMV though. Good luck.

I was looking for a newer access cab TRD 4x4 with less than 40,000 miles, too. I found several of them, but the going rate was only a few thousand cheaper than just buying new. Depreciation? Not with a Tacoma! After months of searching I gave up and bought a new one.

I wish i could buy new, but anything over 20K is really stretching my budget.

I just bought a DC LB 4x4 TRD Sport with 32k miles for $24k. The truck is spotless inside & out...extremely well maintained. I searched for 6 weeks and this was the best deal I could find. Might could have gotten it for $500 less....but it was tough to negotiate over the phone 600 miles away. It was certified, so it qualified for 2.9% interest and 7 year 100k drivetrain warranty.

Tacomas don;t last long at dealers around here or Charleston. People apparently keep them or do better selling them privately because the market demand is high. They are hard to find and hard to deal on used. I know i won't be trading it when I'm ready for something else. I believe they will sell privately easily considering asking prices on the lots.

Believe it or not Carmax has some decent choices. Prices are what they are everywhere.

    http://www.carmax.com/enus/search-results/default.html?search=tacoma&Ep=search%3afindcar%3aused&AZ=29588&ADc=50

Buying used will always save you the most paying cash. Spending $23k on a 2008 0r 09 will cost you maybe $1500 in depreciation the first year. Pay 29K and you will get hit for $5 grand easily because no one will buy a used 2011 for 3 grand less than a new 2012. they would have to save a lot more than that....Maybe $4-$5 grand.

I saved 8 grand on the truck I wanted equipt like the 08 I bought with 24K miles. The avg price paid for mine is $28.4 before fees and taxes. It was worth saving over $8000 to me and I still have a year of warranty and because I bought it at a Toyota dealership where they do not "certify" cars. Certification increases the price of the vehicle far more than an extended warranty from Troy would and which covers more. The 500o point inspection is bogus. Anyone buying a truck should be able to tell by looking and checking Carfax if a car was taken care of. No need for "certification" which is a successful marketing ploy to make more profit on the wholesale to retail spread.

With the $8000 I saved and the payments I make to myself i could buy an 11 or 12 in three or four years and still have plenty left over. The 2011 was not an $8000 upgrade to me and the body style will change sooner as well. May as well save the most now.

If you are talking a loan you have to do the math as long term used car loans are pricey.

The only issue is FINDING a low mileage ( less than 25K) for an 08 or 09 DC TRD for around 23k for a 4WD which also is a $7000+ savings over new...avg paid for a 4wd DC v6 TRD is just under 30K plus tax on $7000 extra as well for those who have sales tax issues.

It's a shame what the market has done. I shopped the used market before buying mine, and the difference was abou $1,500 between used with 23K+ miles and new. I ended up buying new, see what I paid:

'08 DC 4x4; SR5 V6 AT (desert sand mica) . It came with the SR5 #2; towing; 16" alum wheels, door sill guards, 4 pc. mat set.

    MSRP $29,964
    Paid $26,430.
    -$ 2,000 rebate
    Bal. $24,430.

It's hardly worth buying a used one if you want something with low miles. I just paid $13,800 cash a few months back for an 05 double cab TRD 4x4. But it had 113k on it. I looked at the exact same package/options/color/year truck a few days earlier at another dealer with 50k on it and it was $19,500. I paid $22,500 for my fully loaded SR5 4x4 access cab 4 cylinder brand new in 05. There just aren't many out there for sale and when you do find a good deal you better act fast. Lots of people are looking.

I was in this same boat a few ago. I came to realized that these trucks hold their value extremely well and it wasn't worth it to buy slightly use. I was finding 05-07 with 50-70K on them going for 20-24k. I ended up buying a brand new DC LB Sports 4x4 for $28,500.

The more one pays for any vehicle, the more it will depreciate in the first couple years BECAUSE buyers need to save a lot NOT to buy new. So why not let someone else take that hit?

I don't see read here of too many people willing to save even $4000 to buy used. Yet there are few used trucks and they command a good price. Go figure. SOMEONE is buying those trucks (hand goes up) and pocketing the cash. Plus the saved cash in less depreciation going forward.
    .
As far as a truck with 100K for $10K If the equivalent new truck is $30K that's a $20K savings!!! You can practically put a new drive train (which would very highly likely not be needed) in for far far less than that and drive it for five years and likely never spend more than $5000 in repairs. That is a pile of money to spend on repairs of a 100K mile Toyota that could easily go another 100K

Hell..... around here you can't throw a rock without hitting a car or truck with over 150K on it. Those people are not spending thousands keeping them running every year........Yet it costs a new buyer of a $28K truck at least $4000 a year to drive it.....LOL

I understand new cars depreciate the most in the first couple few years. For other cars/truck, I'd sure as hell buy slightly used, but not for Tacomas. For example, around here a 2006 Tacoma DC with 60k would go for $23k-24k. I got my 2010 for $28.5 with WARANTY. So if I bought the used one I'd save $4k. That's losing $1k a year for age of the truck. But somebody else drove the truck for 4 years. I don't know if maintenance is up to date or not, or if owner abused it or not. So if I bought the used one, I'd end up spending another $500 in doing maintenance work to make sure everything is up to date.

I rather spend the extra 3.5k to 4k for a brand new truck that I maintain and knows exactly what goes in to it from the day it leave the dealer. Hell if in 3-4 years I decide to sell it and I get 23-24k out of it. Losing 1k a year for a whole year of use with warranty for that first 3 years, sure as hell worth it to me

Daaaammm.. that is a lot.....I would never pay that much for a truck with 60K either. But less than 25K .....all day long to save $7000

you might wanna look into an 05/06. tacomas hold their value more than anything. if 20k is your limit...i dont see a 09 or 08 being that low unless its a base model

You will get your best buy if you look for an individual selling. Most people that sell have been to a dealer to trade and they have been offered trade-in value which is about $1,000 to $2,500 below private party value. Most of the time you can get it for $500 or so about trade-in. I bought my 2005 TRD Sport Prerunner with 75,000 miles for $15,800. The guy that I bought it from had been offered about $14,800 for it on trade in, so the way he saw it, he made $1,000 more on it, and I got it for a lot less than dealer retail so it was a win, win situation for us both. I found mine on craigslist.
