It’s a secondary offense. So a cop can’t pull you over because you don’t have one but if you’re already pulled over and he notices the cop could write you a ticket for it. Majority of them don’t care though.

Caught me off guard when I saw it with someone pulled over on redwood. Wonder until how long until he gets his/her own account on here.

Don't get that high clearance bumper without mudflaps either. I hear that will get you a fix it ticket :)

Some other things that will earn you a fix it ticket.

Having non covered offroad lights. All the imported knock off lights don't come with any sort of opaque cover. Brands like Baja designs and Rigid sell covers that completely block out the light In case they are on while on the road.

Another thing that drives me nuts is people choosing the wrong offset wheel or using 3" wheel spacers. The result is a wheel/tire that protrudes 3" outside the body of the vehicle.

I think most states limit this amount to 1". A way to fix this is to use mud flaps. Jeeps are notorious for having this issue.

Every year when I get my emissions test, the guy mentions that I should add a fairing to my front bumper so that it is 4" thick. That's another law that might get me a fix it ticket one day. Otherwise my truck is in pretty good 'road legal' shape.

I just wish there was a way to tell people behind me that their high beams are on and are blinding me. or even that their choice of bulbs was bad and is blinding everyone. :/

That lights one I hadn't heard of in Utah. That's a real common ticket / safety inspection rejection earner back in Virginia though.

UT Traffic Code 41-6a-1616 does mention "auxillary lamps" which is what offroad lights are classified as but only in the context that they should illuminate the ground no more than 75' in front of your vehicle. This would be what would make most of them "de facto" illegal, since 90% of mine/most mounting designs don't meet that statute.

-1604 / -1610 / -1616 do not say whether offroad lights merely existing on your truck uncovered is an infraction though, and based on the number of vehicles I see at risk of being ticketed if that were the case, I'd say not. UHP could hit their entire quota just on that one item if it were.

lol. option a...would land me into hotter water i would think

option b would be nice...if they can see it. I'd have to get a ticker sign that reads, "you're blinding people!"

Oh yes, the dreaded mud flap fix it ticket, and for good measure throw in tire poke fix it ticket.

The best part is getting pulled over on the freeway.

    Pic of said mud flap’s.

I got stopped in Green River (Utah) for no front plate when I was living in Arkansas... which doesn't issue a front plate. I explained this to the cop and he said, "Well you're in Utah."

    I mean... Du...uh.

So I ignored the ticket and never heard anything about it. Apparently it didn't follow me when I moved back to Utah.

I like both options. Option B first, just to make sure the person sees it. Then option A to rubbed in their retina for shits and giggles.

As long as you don't have more than 4 forward facing lights illuminated at one time, I don't think anyone will hassle you here.

I can confirm this. I was pulled over years ago for having headlights, fog lights, and 2 additional aux lights turned on. The officer couldn’t quote the exact law, something about no more than 4 “white” lights, and I must have been friendly enough because I went home with nothing but a verbal warning to unplug them.

I’ve also been driving around since 2014 with uncovered lights on my roof (that of course are only used off road and relayed into a switch and brights) and have had no issues. I was even pulled over for a burnt brake light and I asked the officer about all the lights on my truck and he said I was good to go. I even asked him about the previous officers claims of no more than 4 lights and all he knew is that the law gets a little finicky over 4.

About time they had it in writing. At the time back in 2013 I tried looking up what the officer was talking about and I could only ever find vague speculation.
