They don't ALL rust out. My 96 with 415,000 miles frame is as solid as when it rolled off the line 26 years ago. Only slight surface rust in a few areas.

Toyotas are definitely the worst of the lot with regards to frame rust. They only back them because they got sued over it not out of the goodwill of their corporate money making heart.

It's not difficult. There are plenty of holes in various locations. This is after 6 winters. Perfect....zero corrosion. And yes, that's a straw from a couple of years ago that shot up in there. I just never dug it out.

Central Va, but why does it matter?
This truck has been driven in all weather and sit outside entirely for 26 years. My point is that they ALL don't rust, which seems to be the general assumption.

It matters because of road salt and how many of those winters you actually drove it in road salt. We have a 97 Tacoma that I was recently able to pop a hole in the frame with a hammer. The first gens are very prone to rust if they are not kept up on or taken care of. Frame can look ok from the outside but they are rot inside.

How did you get that plastic cover off? I see that you used metal tape for the holes, no?

Looks great. I’m in central PA and would like to try this. How many cans does it typically take you? Do you retreat every year? And where do you buy it. Thanks, man!

It has been driven every winter in the snow, most recently 4 days ago. It has never had any frame maintenance preformed, though I have tapped frame with a hammer periodically over the last few years.
I'm not here debating whether 1st-gens frames rot or not, just making the point that they ALL don't rot which is the general assumption and mine is a perfect example of that.

I would say your truck is a perfect example of a truck that has had very good care for 26 years. Nice!

Took close to 3 and 1/2 cans to do the frame, diff, etc. This is the first year I've applied it, but from research shows it'll need touch ups here and there, but not a yearly full re-application like Fluid Film. I was able to get a 6 pack off Amazon.

Awesome. Thanks, for the info. One more question, does it run & drip a lot after first applying it or is it kind of thick?

It can drip if you apply it too much at one time. I tried to do light coats, but still got a couple runs. Wear some kind of respirator as the mist is quite obnoxious.

No plastic covers or tape. I'm a 2nd gen, so maybe it's different than yours. What you see is 100% stock

Mine is second gen too. They put on plastic covers for the rear part of the boxed section of the frame and closed the holes with plastic caps. I just bought it back in September so I'm thinking when the previous owner was taking it in to be serviced they did the frame inspection + "rust prevention" with the white goo and the caps.

Oh....you had the frame treatment done. Not me. I can do a better job protecting the frame than Toyota can

No doubt. I Fluid Film and Wool Wax mine on top of that. Takes a few days but I did that right when I got it. I think they do that for the 12 year frame warranty. I have until 2027 I guess if it ever goes bad.
