If the guy is buying components off the shelf at full retail without any vendor discount he's only making 50 bucks on the kit


If he's buying bulk and getting cable from a wholesaler than, yes, he's got a very healthy profit margin

 

Still.. 50 bucks for 30 mins of work, I'll take that as a side hustle

 

Have you priced out hydraulic crimping tools for cables? Hand operated are between 100 to 300 depending on quality and the tedium of cutting, stripping, crimping and shrinktubing (even for something that simple) is probably gunna translate to 12-15 sets in a normal 8 hour day

 

Can't say I've used one. When I did the 1/0 for my truck, I started with a hammer and decided a propane torch and solder were better. Heatshrink long enough to cover the melted sheath. Proper cutter and crimper and I can see myself getting down to 30 mins per those sets..
12 sets is still $50/40 mins though; that's a good amount more than I make rn, so still not bad on one product even with (say) 20% overhead.

 

That's just production time. That doesn't include all the overhead cost of keeping a store (even a "simplier" online based one) open

You factor in an increased markup to make up for the fact that this type of product is considered useful to only a niche group of people so your sales are automatically gunna take a major hit.



Take my business for example. There are an extremely limited number of available consumers that need handheld construction equipment. And an even smaller percentage of those consumers actually need the very specialized tools I produce, so for us to stay in business we charge way more for a concrete saw compared to a saw that any Joe blow could buy and slap a concrete blade onto.

 

Granted because we design it around the specialed work, our saws are going to last way longer than a skillsaw you pick up from home depot. But they cost 3 times as much

 

We bought an automatic stripper and ferrule crimper at my old shop where we built industrial control panels. That machine handled only 20awg to 14awg and it cost 9k lol and only handled one style of ferrule

 

So you're the Grainger business model

Those fuckers just buy in bulk off the shelf items and justify their prices due to ability to expedite product to down customers.

We hand tailor our products to specific customer requests (within reason) where as our competitors just have a "we only build whats in our catalog and you're gunna buy it and like it cause where else are you gunna go" business model.

 

Thats how we roll on some products Niche industries are awesome.

For example. The biggest fish in our industries pond is Husqvarna's Construction division. They're a 208m a year in sales business because 1) no one makes as large a catalog as they do a 2) no one else has as many service centers as they do. But customers freekin hate dealing with them when shit breaks down and they have frequent field breakdowns cause the equipment gets built to as cheap a standard as they can get away with. On the flip side we're only 1.7m a year but our shit doesn't have as many failures and it's built so these in house mechanics can work on it and not have to take it to a repair center plus we'll change stuff about it if a customer places and order and wants it built differently than what our catalog says. If we had more guys and started manufacturing our own parts instead of relying on outside machine shops I know we could do way more in sales each year.. boss man is constantly having to reject sales cause our production schedule has never been less than 3wks out
