OK Off Road Owners

There's a lot of threads here about the value of A-TRAC by OR owners and I would like to know if you have used it in the last 3 months because you really needed it?

 

Just used mine saturday on a trail run. Felt it kick in quite a bit while ascending snowy inclines.

 

Used it a few weeks ago launching a boat from a back-yard ramp. The water was low, and I dropped the ass end off the back of the concrete ramp. Even where my front tires were was covered in silt. The back tires were useless, I was able to pull the trailer back out with just the two front tires grabbing. There is no way I would have gotten out of it without ATRAC or a front locker, just not enough traction for one tire to pull the truck and trailer. The guy with me was super impressed.

 

Used it to help finish a climb up a rutted hill. Works like it's supposed to.

 

had to use ATRAC a few weeks ago at cleghorn. for some reason 4lo and the rear locker didnt cut it on one of the bypasses. hit the atrac button and up we went. little jerky this time...but made it

 

Great replies... although it may have been over 3 months since I have been off roading much, A-TRAC is active when ever I go into L4... as spinning tires is just silly and damaging to the roads and tires.

While we can get almost anywhere we want without A-TRAC, there is peace-of-mind knowing it is there and does what is claimed!

The first time I really needed it was when my Tacoma was a couple months old and we went out to the Drug Airport/ Welk Run near San Marcos/ Escondido... I backed down a deeply rutted climb and high centered the back end with the tires over the ruts and truck resting on the diff. and spare.

The rear locker was useless since neither back tire was on the ground, and in 4WD the front might have had one good tire on the grond firmly. So the other tire would have spinned away. The A-TRAC was on, and I gave it the gas... and my truck pulled itself out of the ruts...

Since then I have taken my truck to the limits many times in Baja and in the desert near here... it is amazing technology that turns our truck into a tractor!

 

Nope I have never used. And for a good reason: I don't have it.

 

The way the poll is worded may put off a few A-TRAC owners... We may not always 'need' to use it... but it is a more enjoyable experience to crawl up or through with it turned on.


In loose rocks or similar, regular 4WD will have one rear and one front spinning and kicking out rocks... beats just one rear tire spinning (2WD) or usually beats two rear only tires spinning (locker or LSD).

Off Road TRDs before 2009 had regular 4WD plus a rear locker... two rear tires locked plus one in front spinning... Prety much took us everywhere... but what if any of the tires didn't need to spin and kick out rocks and dig ruts?

Traction Control in Low Range: A-TRAC... All four tires with rotation matched across an axle, so spinning free and kicking up rocks and making ruts is reduced or eliminated so energy (torque) moves your truck forward!

There will be usage for sure 20 inches of snow coming with ice ... Its supposed to be biblical. I wonder if NorthEast gonna get slammed like in 90's and they going have to call National Guard to help.
Its goign to be fun passing by or pulling those Humvee s out of ditches

Last weekend near a place called snake lake. I was going through a river bed (dry) that had been washed out next to a stream and was teetering. Passenger tire on solid and driver rear on solid ground and air under the other two tires. put the A-Trac on and it hooked right up and had lunch next to the stream it worked perfectly.

Blizzard of '78 was one to remember too. I got home in a '70 Barracude convertible and it was buried so deep in snow the next day I could not find it. The town I lived in had a State of Emergency for 2 weeks.

 

As does cgs2k2 and TacomaRoamer. S.B. has an 08. Was it an option in those years?

It is nice? Yeah. Is it needed? Nah. I ran an 86 4Runner with open diffs for years.

 

Used it a few times and it's worth every penny. The feature alone makes me appreciate my OR model even more.

 

Never used it, but it's because I haven't gone anywhere that would require even a 4L. I think I used my 4H once or twice, when I went snowboarding and when I was at Pismo Beach. But it's nice to know I have it just in case. I'm one of those, "better to have it and not need it..." type of guys
