What Throttle setting are you running? Your on KDMAX 7.0 if you were tuned in October. We released KDMAX-Pro mid November.
We optimized the throttle settings to be more linear removing any jerkiness some were having. You may want to upgrade to the Pro tune.

What is the difference between the kdmax 6.0 and 7.0? My tuner never let me know there was an update

Oh gotcha thanks! I was curious as to why the pro tune isn't as strong up top as the premium 6.0 tune? How come you didn't put the lower end benefits of the pro and top end of the 6.0 premium together into one tune? Again just curious and not super knowledgeable when it comes to the subject

I wish it was that easy. Most tune changes made will negatively affect other things. The Toyota tune uses multiple variables- load, rpm, throttle, timing, temp, speed, etc… You can’t just turn it up or turn it down. One little change can affect many things and has to be tested in Drive, S-Mode, ECT, 4wd, Cruise Control, etc…
Making a tune that is good under all driving conditions is not an easy task.

I believe the top end on the Pro tune is as good as the previous tune. We did not lose anything. The Dyno tests will be different if we did again tomorrow. They all get 20-30 hp gains up top.

Show us the dyno run of a stock truck putting down 244hp. Put your money where your mouth is. We both know you won’t because its bs. A stock truck on the most generous dyno isn’t putting down 244hp. A 2wd MIGHT put down 235 at most in perfect conditions.

Anyways, I got the pro tune in November and absolutely love it! I went with the lightest throttle setting and it’s perfectly smooth. I wouldn’t want a more sensitive throttle setting in the snow.

Now my question. I’m on stock gears and if I go to 4.88 gears sometime down the road do I need to get it re tuned?

The way this person likely saw a 244 HP stock truck was the shop did the dyno pull in 3rd gear. In 3rd, the torque converted never fully locks, plus it’s not 1:1 gear ratio, so you get higher numbers.

It’s also an indication of a dyno shop that cares more about their dyno than their customers transmission. Torque converter is gonna be hot after a few wide open dyno pulls in 3rd. People typically do dyno runs in 1:1 (4th gear on a Tacoma) with TC locked for this reason.

Haha! I laughed at pea-cocking. My thoughts exactly but I'm still happy K+D got this on the dyno and posted up awesome results. I'd be willing to say 99.99% of people absolutely love KDMax just because of improved drivability alone/how much more fun it is to drive and not be annoyed at the 3rd gens lack of response/bi-polar shifting. There was an increase of posts from someone (well, the same 1-2 characters who are mostly Facebook keyboard warriors or fake dupe accounts) that had been trying to bash the name and literally post in every group possible spamming because of a faulty dyno run they did on the oldest version of the tune that was released. Everyone usually responds with something like you said right back at them.

It's still a NA Tacoma and there's no reason to live or die by the dyno, but there will always be people who just want to see it too which is fine. If HP was all that mattered I'd have a TRX that I wouldn't trust to get me to and from home. But agreed on all counts. For the record-- New England/MA has the best hoagies outside of a proper Philly Cheesesteak and CT (New Haven) has the best Pizza.

Not blasting you or anyone else here, but I'm sure some of you saw a Facebook post recently where someone tested KDMax (not Pro) with 3rd gear and supposedly got lower numbers. Someone else was claiming it was because they were in 3rd gear. I'm not sure 3rd would really give better or worse numbers though, as most discussions online don't give a definitive answer.

From what I can gather, the Dyno can tell your RPM and MPH and can factor in the gear. This may only be certain Dyno's though. It seems very common for a lot of Dyno's to run in 3rd gear. Some people prefer 4th gear runs because they are longer (20+ seconds), thus making them more accurate but numbers are typically very similar. Some people and shops also prefer 3rd gear because they are shorter and apparently easier to control. Running with the TC locked should yield higher numbers, which also seems to support running in 4th could be more beneficial. But being that we have to edit the stock tune to gear lock, what would stop anyone from running in 3rd with the TC locked?

244 HP is honestly not far off if you consider 15% drivetrain loss. 85% of 278 HP puts the output at 236 HP. Factoring in other factors the Dyno may not take into consideration, like environment, I bet that is an achievable number to get stock.

Choosing 1:1 prevents gearing bias with dynojets specifically (vs Mustang, Dyno Dynamics, etc where you don’t have to worry about it). That dyno done with kdmax 6.0 was on a dynojet. You’ve always been an awesome resource in the taco/tuning community and definitely didn’t come off as bashing! Open discourse is always helpful, that dude on FB was just on one.

This explains it better than I can:

“The reason for the dyno in the 1:1 gear ratio is due to the Dynojet. Dynojet mathematically creates a horsepower number based on mass (which is the known weight of the rollers) and accleration (how fast the car is accelerating the known weight).

    F=ma

From force (F), we can calculate horsepower.

Dyno the car in 2nd gear, and acceleration (a) goes way up, causing force (F) to go way up.

So by dynoing the car in the gear closest to the 1:1 gear ratio, we eliminate any acceleration advantage or disadvantage caused by the transmission, which gives us unskewed whp numbers (even though Dynojet has a fudge factor in there which makes them skewed anyways and read high).

As for other dynos out there (i.e. Mustang and Dyno Dynamics) - they use a load cell to measure roll force (the amount of force the tire is placing on the roller). Based on roll force and the radius arm going to the load cell, we get roll torque. Based on roll torque and roll speed, we can get vehicle horsepower. Vehicle horsepower and vehicle RPM gives vehicle torque. It doesn't matter what gear you run in on load cell style dynos as they are measuring force, not acceleration. Force does not change from gear to gear.”

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe dyno runs have to be done in 3rd on the Tacoma as 4th gear will hit the speed governor before it hits redline.

Yes. The “Global speed” setting essentially removes the governor (I know you know this but answering OP)

Do the tunes move the speed governor up? I hit the governor around 125mph
