Is it bump steer?

Hello Tacoma Gurus, I recently got my 2013 DCSB Off Road lifted 3" Suspension Lift with the differential drop and sway bar relocation bracket installed and I've noticed that the steering wheel moves in relation to a bump or a dip in the road. I told the shop that installed it to set it at 2.5" but when I went to pick it up it looked like they maxed it out at 3" and it looked good so I left it that way. It has almost 129,000 miles on it . I'm thinking this is bump steer or is something worn out like lower ball joints or something else and wondering what I need to do to get it fixed.

Did they do an alignment post lift? If so, what are the specs, post up the post alignment spec sheet.

 

Check your upper steering shaft that gets crusty

 

This. Caster will need to be corrected with a lift that high. I put high caster UCA's on my third gen to remedy this. I believe it's the same situation on the 2g's. Truck is very happy sitting at 4 degrees of caster.

bump steer happens on old Audi's and Porsche's because the tie rod shortens during suspension compression

 

This, but anything with an IFS can get 'bump steer' if the tie rod angle isn't "flat" after a suspension lift. The steeper the angle of the tie rods (looking directly at them from the front of the vehicle), the more pronounced the toe in/out gets as the suspension cycles.

 

At 2.5" or 3" of lift if you didn't change the UCA's you'll get a bump steer type of situation. The stock upper ball joint runs out of down travel with that much lift.

 

I got the SPC Light Racing Control Arms listed at the bottom of the lift page link and they charged me for an alignment but didn't give me a copy of the alignment specs.

I may take it to a different shop and have them do another alignment and correct the UCA angles if that's the problem and look at the tie rod angles like 2ndhandTacoma mentioned. Anything else to look for while they are at it?

Then it shouldn't be lack of upper ball joint travel. Front alignment makes a pretty big difference on my truck but I haven't experienced bad bump steer in a Tacoma yet so idk.

 

It isn't bad bump steer, it's tolerable, but it is there and my OCD knows it's there!

I read it, Nice! So that's what it is instead of bump steer. Well Dang! Bump Steer would be cheaper to fix if that's what it was! I may have to live with it for what that thing cost but I'd like to have it. I'd have to drive cross country to get it installed since I'm in Jawga! Thanks 81Trekker!
