Chest thumping is strong in this thread. It's all up to the individual as to what trim level they want. some don't want a Pro and some don't want an OR. Both are available in limited quantities, you'll likely over pay for either one today.

I think a Pro is not a bad way to go at all. I just wanted to upgrade some things the way I wanted. I’m actually getting my suspension/tires/wheels upgraded this month and pretty excited. If I went with Pro I would have left it 95% stock. In my case it would be close to a wash in terms of cost if I went with a Pro.

    Ok,
It seems like there are a lot of opinions about pro vs off road suspension, rear end, value etc- but your question really pertains to the audio system if I read correctly. So here goes…
The TRD Pro has the JBL audio system with a subwoofer and I really like the way it sounds considering I did not have to do anything extra.. That being said, it does have its fair share of connectivity issues that you mentioned. The JBL system is a royal PITA to interface with or replace- so if you want the truck easiest to add aftermarket audio to it would be an Off Road WITHOUT the premium or upgraded audio package. This would be the simplest route. The JBL audio system uses speakers with non standard impedance making them difficult to work with. The most upgradeable audio will be the truck with the lowest grade factory audio system.

As for the truck itself, I agree with most of the comments here about value- an off road is best platform to upgrade suspension, etc. I would have gone that way if I had the time to do it- I am short on time so I chose a Pro.

I think an automatic adds about $1000.

Yes, the manual has an electric drivers seat.

If you get the most advanced technology package it adds a little over $5K to the price. I did not care about leather or heated seats and the moon roof was a hard no for me. But, if you start wanting to add anything to the OR price does go up and you can get an OR into the Pro price range with extras (that might be standard on the Pro, though I never priced a Pro after seeing the base MSRP).

You kind of get 2 kinds of OR buyers. The I would get an SR, but need 3.5L and 4x4, making the OR better as it includes A-TRAC/MTS and a locker (and you have to get a TRD for a manual). Or, the I want a Pro, but cannot justify the expense.

I am the former, and it is surprisingly hard to find an OR without a bunch of extras.

Anyone who wants front and rear lockers is better off with an SR. I want them, but recognize that I wanted them for 12 years on my 1st Gen and never got around to it. Plus, I really wanted a manual.

Pro wheels run about $800, LED fogs are included with the truck, better than Pro suspension would run about $2000. So still less money for the same or better performance from an OR. The Pro is 90% an appearance package upgrade over the OR.

I bought my PRO because it's a PRO and has everything I want on my truck right off the lot.
I don't want to piece meal shit together to build a better truck. Skid Plate here, upgrade shocks there, blah blah blah....better truck.
Bought the PRO. Happy with the PRO.
Love the Off Roads but didn't want one.
To each their own I guess.

LostMarbles makes a good point- I have seen Off Roads with so many useless options (99.00 phone cables?) that the price can actually exceed a Pro. Those seem to be the only ones available because no one wants to pay for them.

I like the OR because I can get it in ways you can't get the Pro.

I can get the OR in more colors.
I don't want a scoop, blacked headlights, tail lights, moonroof or stamped bedsides.
I can get the OR in three configs, two come with a 6 foot bed.
Parts of the Pro I want can be purchased individually and simply bolted on.

Cost has never been the deciding factor.

Did the list of reasons for what keeps me out of a Pro confuse you?

Lack of a 6 foot bed is the deal breaker for me. If they made an Access cab manual transmission or DCLB Pro in Quicksand I could live with the rest of the stuff I don't like.

    Yep. It most certainly did.

Why did you get an OR? Because it comes in a long bed. How do you like the long bed? I don’t know, I purchased a short bed. Lol.

    "trail"
    lol.
My TRD OR has a rear locker.

I'll put it this way, if I had a PRO, the only thing I'd change is the tires.

I like it alot, I've had five Toyota trucks, three were single cabs with a 6 foot bed, two doublecabs, one a SB and now the longbed. Never again will I have a shortbed, I learned my lesson.
    20191206_114019.jpg
    20190907_113938.jpg
I bought my current truck in Feb 2016 when there were no 3rd Gen Pro's available. When they released the 3rd gen 2017 Pro model in late 2016, I had the Pro grill on my truck by Dec 2016 of that same year. My first two trucks said "TOYOTA" on the grill, I wanted my last truck to say the same as I've never been a fan of the Sombrero logo.

When they said the Pro would only be a DCSB, I knew then I'd never buy one.

When I had a shortbed I'd always wished I'd had a little more room, with a 6 foot bed I've never thought I had too much.

I guess I'm partly to blame for people putting Pro (Heritage) grills on their trucks now. When I did it there were hardly any Pros out there. The original chrome cheese grater grill on a QS truck really looks bad. The black and tan scheme looks a lot better to me. I also like the Pro graphics but I think the bedside graphic looks better on the longbed. Wheels are the 4runner Pro 17 inch, also installed in early 2016.

My decision was based off wait time only. I really liked the Pro. The dealership told me to expect to pay an additional $10K and get in the 4-6 month wait line. I needed a truck right away, unfortunately. Time wasn’t on my side. I knew I wanted the cement color because it was discontinued for 2022. I also really enjoy mods and making my truck exactly how I want it to be. Doing the mods myself and turning a wrench on my truck is one of my favorite hobbies so OR was a no brainer for me.

    Like, so many.
You can make a more capable truck for less money if you go with the OR. If you are staying stock, go Pro. If you can find one.

Except you are getting smaller differentials than the OR/PRO. If you go lockers might as well get bigger diffs to go with the lockers. So not so good a deal in the sr.
