But geese do, and they can drop a bomb that's close to cow sized.

Never seen one of their bombs from the air, but in Broomfield CO (suburb of Denver) the county office grounds are covered in geese.

It's like a mine field trying to walk between buildings, like an avian version of San Francisco.

Then you should get ditch lights :) Human eyes don't do very well at seeing past a brightly lit foreground which is the main problem with running fog lights when it's clear. If you're moving at much more than about 25mph then you're overrunning your fog lights. By overrunning I mean that even if you do see something it's far too close by then for you to do much more than clench your seat between your cheeks. And running them is at the expense of being able to see further down the road. It's no big deal if you're going slow, but I see tons of people running them at freeway speeds thinking that the lights are helping them.

We can disagree, but for the record you are trying to disagree with human anatomy and biology :) As I mentioned above, any time you're driving with fog lights on in the dark you are sacrificing distance vision for up close vision. This isn't a problem so long as you are also adjusting your speed and slowing down so that the fog lights are truly beneficial. Inclement weather where you're turning at an intersection? Sure, you're going slow enough that fog lights will help. Following curves on a winding road in inclement weather at freeway speeds? They're not helping at all and probably hurting your ability to see what's further up the curve.

are you writing the above in a context of running fog lights without headlights on, like you might when going slowly through heavy fog?

‘cuz the way I read the quoted posts they are running both simultaneously…. Headlights for distance illumination, fog lights for better close/side illumination

What nonsense are you talking about? I'm not running ditches on the freeway. I'm also running DD sports which are not that bright and have the same foreground brightness as the stock Halogens or even my HID's. Stop giving me advice. I don't need it.

You have to love add copy. "Luckies are less irritating to your throat." That's like saying a 9mm to the head is less irritating than a 45.

They wanna bitch about me running with my fog lights on, they can go and bitch about all those cars with the bright ass white or blue headlights that blind me when they have their low beams on. I need more light sometimes just to see the fog line when those bastards are coming the other way.

Not sure about other vehicles, but on the 2nd Gen Tacoma you can't run the factory fogs unless the headlights are on and the fogs will turn off if you flip the brights on. Normally your fogs will be on with your headlights, this is the situation that I refer to. (I've since found out that this isn't the case for all Toyotas)

The problem is with the human eye. You don't get both distance and close up with lighting. Close up lighting will take away your distance viewing. Take a gander at the link I posted above, it'll do a much better job of explaining (and links to relevant studies).

That's a different topic :) I think a warning is acceptable for the first offense, vehicle crushed for the second. I also think they should be going after all of the auto parts stores selling LED headlamp bulbs labeled "not for street use"

I will mention that if you're having issues with other's lights at night that I'd recommend getting checked for astigmatism. Turns out that was a lot of the issue for me at night. I still have issues with occasional people blinding me for the same reasons you list, but it's not nearly as bad since I started wearing glasses.

If you're running winding roads at interstate speeds and inclement weather, no amount of lights are going to scare that tree away before you hit it :D

You're referring to the second gen. On the third gen Tacoma you can run your DRL / parking lights with the fog lights. Granted, you should run your headlights with the fog lights but you do have the option of running the middle switch. Lol

Not correct for third gen. It literally has

    B6FFE1F2-2719-4E30-A0B8-E6B36D9F42BF.jpg

Also (best I recall) not correct for my wife’s 2012 RAV4 and wasn't correct for my 2002 4Runner.

AS for the other stuff, i’ll look at the citation another day but am inclined to believe what I literally see with my own eyes. The fog lights provide a wider field of lighting of similar luminosity as the central field of the headlights.

And yet for so many people slowing down is not considered an option

Did not know that about the 3rd gen, just knew that my 2nd gen needs the headlights on for the fogs to run. I'll amend my previous post.

Here's something you can try: Grab a seat on the couch and turn on the TV. Now grab a book and turn a reading light on behind you. Now hold the book up with the light shining on it and try to watch the TV over the top of the book. You're not going to have the best TV watching experience because you're going to have the bright book in the foreground. The light reflecting up close is going to overwhelm the light coming from far away, even if you're focusing on the light further way.

Sounds like your fog lights are crappy fog lights. Or you've installed them upside down.

    Poor analogy.

18” away vs 15’ away with very different levels of illumination is a substantially larger differential than fogs/headlights, particularly when you’re talking about very different illumination levels.

I’ve not seen such a differential between fog/headlight illumination levels on any vehicle I’ve owned. If someone does encounter it, it’d likely be due to an upgrade - and in that case they might best think about a better matched fog light upgrade.

My 4Runner has the same switch. The fogs won't come on until the headlights are on.

I don't really care if other people drive with their factory foglights on, it's the people that drive around the city with their high beams on that bothers me.
