Magnuson Supercharger Mega Thread for 16+ Tacoma - Unboxing, Install DIY, Dyno Video

Single AFR is sufficient. Dual is nice, but you're generally going to have some discrepancy between the two sides anyway and gauges tend to encourage some increasingly obsessive observation anyway. At least in my experience with my big turbo speed3. It's why I initially didn't want a boost gauge for my TT Tacoma, and sure enough, I was always watching it. So personally, the more data available to me, the harder it seemed to be to ignore it and just enjoy driving.

That said, that data is/can be valuable, it's nice to be able to know when something is wrong, but don't also fixate on the additional data and convince yourself that there's a problem when there isn't.

 

Copy all. This is my first time modifying a truck with anything larger than a 4cyl. My 2000 turbo is so much easier. Lol.

Unless I can find a smoking deal on the dual gauge setup before I get back from this deployment, I may just save the dough and get a single unit. I only plan on running AFR and BOOST, same as on my turbo truck (for now anyway, lol)

 

The temptation for more is always there, lurking...lol

 

The people that want to chase down higher power numbers would find more value in dual wideband.

 

I'm not really a numbers chaser for power. I just want it to feel how I want it to feel. Only time I look at numbers is when I've got a limiting factor in the "build" somewhere. Ex: my 2000 2RZ I did the 80s supra W58 trans swap. Supra forums say this trans is good for somewhere around 400 hp\trq. So when I took the truck to the tuner I told him if he gets close to that and has room to keep tuning, to actually stop...don't wanna have a good tuned powerful truck that I can no longer drive because I grenaded the trans the next day. Lol. He actually ended up running out of injector at around 17psi and 347 whp\320(something) wtrq...I was happy with that. I've since switched to a smaller turbo (spool was stupid slow), and am over 20 psi, but haven't done the retune yet to really see what it's making...all I know is it's running rich because of it. Lol. But it's not a daily so it doesn't get driven until I get that dialed back in... But I digress, not trying to derail the thread.

For my 19, I just want good driveability and power, no specific number to chase...above stock V8 power maybe? Lol

Edit: one thing that got me thinking about the dual AFR gauge is the fact that VFtuner talks about on his forum of cylinder #5 having a lot of misfires, so that can throw off AFRs on that bank alone when seeking higher power of course. Just a thought. He is developing a patch for it though, I'm sure you follow his forum, but thought I'd mention it.

 

I bought the innovative dual and a craven speed flexpod. Unfortunately the bezel for the innovative gauge is too large and it contacts the mount on the flexpod. Normal I would just file it down but it looks like it also would be cutting into the gauge itself. I can snap a pic tomorrow but it looks like I’ll be sending it back and probably picking up the same gauges that @Formidable has.

 

It works if you file the mount down a bit. The bezel does still touch the mount a little, but I didn’t have to mod the bezel.

 

How's everyone re plumbing the inlet hose to the pump if running bumper/winch? Have a silicone 90 and some couplings. Didn't know if anybody has found a 1 piece bend out there

 

Sweet, my SC gets installed by RSG 1 week from today - this should all be ready by then, right? Just teasing, of course. Can't wait to try out your tune when it is ready!

 

Subscribing in hopes a 3rd party tune becomes availible. I have a 21trd pro with the Maggie on it and it still struggles not to downshift to hold 80mph I do have a 1" lift to clear the 285/75r17 tires.

 

That’s a gearing problem more than tune, unless you’re upping boost (hoping) to overcome being under-geared.

 

I was planning on picking one of these up as soon as they were available but decided to hold out until a better tune is available. At least these are better than the first gen TRD/Magnuson chargers that destroyed plenty of engines before URD and others came out with fuel mods for them. Hopefully some tuners are working on it and it won't be too long.

One very promising thing about the Magnuson supercharger is that it is WAY oversized for this motor. If you look at how linear the dyno looks as it approaches redline… lots of room. The limit won’t be due to heat soak as was part of the problem on prior generations. The limit will be fuel. The Yotawerx tune allows us to run the smaller 87mm pulley safely… and the 84mm is ready to be installed for further testing.

Few more things to iron out for the 90mm and we hope to get the 84mm up and running here soon.

 

Are you needing to install a shorter belt for the smaller pulleys or is there enough adjustment in the tensioner to take up the slack?

 

the 87 fits fine with no belt change. Haven’t tried the 84mm pulley yet.

We also need to look at the throttle body as a restriction and potential upgrade.

 

URD has an adapter plate for the larger throttle body from the 4.7 and 5.7 V8's...I think it's 76mm vs 70mm

 

Are these CA legal now? anyone have an estimated total cost? parts, install ect

 

Yeah the CARB approval came though a while ago.
