    I can't speak French actually, though I can read it to a limited extent.
    I was in Grad school and my Master's thesis required research in French government archives.
    (No, I didn't travel to France, my thesis advisor already had the relevant records on microfiche).
    I spent months in the basement of the library entering data on punch cards.
    When they let me, I got mainframe time in the dead of night to run some simple Fortran II programs to sort the data.
    Those were the Stone Age times before PCs. :rolleyes:

    I got my Master's alright, but took a different path.
    (By that time, I heartily disliked Academia and most everyone in it.)
    Life is full of surprises. :)
