It was very loose when I found it, yes. I changed this timing belt 4 years ago and never took this cam gear off to do it, and service history doesn't show it ever getting a valve cover gasket (gear must be removed to take off the valve cover) so I think it finally loosened from the factory torque. He had a collapsed VVT actuator and it was causing an almost impact gun like movement of the cam as spring pressure and the internal chain slammed it back and forth, that might've done it too. Either way I used some loctite and torqued the new gear to spec on the new cam haha. It was $35 for a gear, cam, and actuator from a fresh wreck in the junkyard.

 

That's not too bad, price wise at least. Sounds like it was a pretty straight forward fix, although a PITA to have to do for that reason.

 

Yeah, it was not bad at all. I cheated and used zipties to hold tension on the belt to the lower timing sprocket since I didn't wanna take more apart than I had to. From there it was all under the valve cover, both cams, the internal chain (drives the intake cam from the vvt actuator on the back of the exhaust cam which is the only cam driven directly by the belt) all came out. Then it was just tough to find info on how to phase the cams during reassembly, this is not an enthusiast engine... there is no community dedicated to enjoying it... even the factory information on AllData was pretty bare bones. All said and done probably had 5hrs into it and that includes running back to the junkyard haha.

 

I think Toyota does this just to fuck with us. They're like nope you're stuck with the wood or the color you don't want because it's funny to us.

When I swapped out the white powered mirrors for the black powered mirrors, it was the same thing I had to rewire the pigtails. I was amazed the bolt pattern on the mirror's lined up.

 

I've done stuff like that with zip ties when I didn't want the chain or sprockets to jump timing while I was changing guides.

 

A friend who previously worked in the auto industry gave me some insight into this. We were talking about how Toyota sells loose UCA bushings for 4Runners but only loaded arms for Tacomas even though the designs are identical. He said sometimes those differences are due to the subcontractors that assemblies are manufactured by, not due to the automaker's own engineers.

In the UCA bushing case (according to his speculation, he doesn't have inside Toyota knowledge), Toyota USA/NUMMI subcontracted the Tacoma arm assembly to someone that decided to ship the loaded arms as a single SKU while Toyota Japan subcontracted the 4Runner arm assembly to someone that decided the bushings and arms should have separate SKUs.

It does seem un-Toyota to have different plugs for the same function in an otherwise interchangeable part, but it might not have been Toyota that made that choice if they subcontracted out the entire power window/lock/mirror system as a unit. The mirror bolt pattern, on the other hand, seems like a key part of the design that Toyota would have specified.

I wonder if the difference is model year rather than Limited/un-limited in @Kwikvette's case? That seems like a more Toyota explanation than using different plugs for different trim levels.

I'll take pictures when I have a chance, but the parts that I received came from a non-Limited of the same year (1998).

I did not test fit all the parts, but started with the driver side seeing how it's a larger assembly.



The power switch portion on the non-Limited uses tabs that hold the assembly into place, as well as 2 screws.

The Limited lacks these tabs, but uses the same hole placement for the screws. It uses 3 screws versus 2.



Last but not least, the Limited switch assembly is taller and has a white plastic cover on the back end. On the non-Limited, it's transparent.

 

The majority of those switches appear to be the same as what I have in my 03 4Runner. Might want to look into 4th gen switches.

We have TZ issues quite often because we show conditional info based on the user's location. Showing scheduled events on the right day gets funky lol

When I worked for the .NET org we had an issue with date/time on a client VPN cert which for whatever reason could not be updated and replaced with a new cert. The SVP of tech spun up a new client server that was like 10 years in the past to accept the invalid cert lolol #BestPractices

Got it back up, it was an easy fix. turned out to be a frozen bearing on the exhaust fan. A little 3 in 1 oil and it was good to go.

 

Wanted a new fob for my LC... on second thought maybe I'll just put a newer system in place of the old RS3000
