Is she financial stable is my only concern. I don't even care if she's single.

Does it record even when vehicle is off? thinking about getting one after all these years with the crazy people driving now.

Almost there, aiming it to be done by this week.

I run a BlackVue DR590W (not the latest model) and it's been super reliable on- or off-road. The DR590 comes in 1-CH and 2-CH kits. The 2-CH kit includes a second slave camera you can attach to the rear glass. I set the camera to record in 30 FPS to reduce the file size - with a 64GB card, it can record couple of days' worth of footage. It takes 12V directly (not 5V USB) so it's easy to tap into the rear view mirror's plug with a Mirror Wire 3005202 power cord: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ontario-bs-thread.249665/page-1245#post-22240731

The camera has a parking mode that reduces power draw if you wire it to an always-on 12V source.

You can download individual clips from the camera to your phone over wifi via the Blackvue app, or take out the microSD card and view the videos on a PC.

I had an Amazon one with a hardwire kit in my VW, it worked fairly well. It recorded off of motion or G-sensor (though the G-sensor was trash). Loved it for when I was working retail and parking at malls.

The only downside was that it really drains the battery, I had a big ~775 CCA AGM battery that was flat a couple times just from leaving it overnight (to be fair it was -30).

I still have it but I'm reluctant to put it in the Tacoma for this reason.

How did you route the rear camera wires to the front? Dropped the headliner?

ran it down behind the driver side airbags in the A pillar (so the cable doesnt cross over it and block deployment), down in the plastic door sill cap, past the B pillar, and up the C pillar.

this is what an architect would say.

    as a civil eng;
I ran it this way anyways since i took advantage of a few other issues i'd have come accross.

    1) the camera needs a 5V power via USB so the power cable for it is the 12v cig plug (to a 5v USB adapter) in the center console/ arm rest. (being 2018 i dont have a dedicated USB connection inside there.) So i had to bring power UP to the camera first, meaning i had to pull the A pillar plastics off.

    2) it's a bitch to take off the head liner

    3) the kit came with a 15ft cable for the rear camera. so to avoid having to make a coil of wires, which could heat up and catch fire). i ran the longer route, which i managed to take out the majority of the slack out.

    4) :brianr:

and this is what a mechanic would say :p

cut wire and use this baddie :D

for real though, headliners are terrible, and never go back looking as nice as factory. :fistbump:

Edit: my original dashcam install in my VW was a ghetto hardwire - jumped off a fuse (rather poorly), which rattled so I shoved a microfiber inside to stop it, and the 15ft of wire was tucked into the A pillar with the airbag :anonymous:

does the head liner even have enough room to hide that converter? If we go the route that @3JOH22A did with the 12v connection into the rear-view mirror. it technically would work.

interesting, thats a cool method! I wonder if it could even be done off the rear brake light? (assuming you don't care about always-on)

    realized im fucking stupid :smash:

Not saying your way is bad, just bugging you really, cause I would do the exact same thing :anonymous:

    don't worry, it's fine.
I need the cable between the 2 cables anyways unless i go with a wireless transmitter unit. but we're going into cheese levels not known for this world.

it also gives us something to talk about other than @Norilsk failing love life.

okay, on that note hear me out:

Wire off the "bed lights" located in the cab brake light and remove the bulbs. If you turn the switch on you will technically have constant power.

Not only this, it will also provide always-on, because those lights work when the truck is shut off.
