2022 Trail Edition Owners Thread

Yes, that's MSRP. That's the reason I chose this dealer. I refuse to pay ADM.

I posted this in the other thread, but for those of you who didn't catch it, I'll put it here (this one seems to be keeping steam regardless so figured I'd keep posting/answering questions)

I'd like to pose a different question to this group: Why did you choose a Trail Edition over a TRD Off Road?

I've seen lots of posts in here talking about why it's a waste of money, not that great, etc., and so I'd like to hear from the future owners now for a different perspective. I can start:

I have been waiting over a month for one of my dealers to get something other than barebones SR5's or Sports. I was interested in the TRD Off Road, and Army Green is my dream color. So that included the Trail in my desire for an off-road variant Tacoma.

So Dealer 1, who lets me remove any port options and has the best deal (MSRP + $619 for Seat+Paint Protectant, Free Tint), called me and said they had an AG Trail Edition available. Dealer 2, who's been helpful but is always AWOL on allocation days, let me know the same day they had the TRD Off Road I wanted, but with all this stuff from port I had no desire for (sidesteps, mudguards, tailgate lock, etc.).

To try and go for the OR, just based on the timing that day, would've meant possibly ending up with nothing by passing up the Trail because Dealer 2 told me their allocation and then wouldn't respond after repeated contact requests for the rest of the morning. So the risk of getting nothing wasn't worth it.

So, I went with the Trail and so far I am happy with my decision as it seeps in. I am definitely in the minority here, but I don't want to do any serious modifications to the truck. I did stuff to my last car and I just really want a stock truck, that comes how it comes, that will look factory fresh in 5 years when everyone else has inevitably modified theirs. Nothing wrong with modding, but I don't want to do that this time (headlights exception).

So, having a truck that comes with the color, wheels, and grille I ideally want from factory, with a mild lift, is perfect. I realized all I am missing out on are the LED headlights (those would've been $485 more on the TRDOR anyways, so not like they're standard), Crawl Control/MTS (for my needs and most I have read says it's not necessary, locker is enough), Smart Key (I don't care), Bilsteins (oh well, would've been nice but everyone seems to say any stock shocks are trash and to upgrade anyways, so why does it matter), Wireless Charger (pointless if wired CarPlay). And I actually prefer the seats on the SR5, and they'll have that nice tan stitching.

So ultimately, this is a crazy market and you take what you can get. My choices were a Trail Edition, which gets that kid-like excitement going for me, for $1100 less than the TRDOR available (which was sketchy to reserve), which had one thing I really wanted (LED Headlights) and a bunch of stuff I didn't want from Port, plus less dealer package value ($695 Tint required).

To me, the Trail is for people like me. Who value a stock truck, that comes from the factory a certain way, with a warranty for things like the locker and lift, don't want to mess with changing the grille due to the safety sensor (safety and collision warning etc. is top priority for me upgrading), and just want to enjoy their truck day one how it is and have something you don't see every day.
I would've been really happy with either a TRDOR or a Trail - however, in this market, there are not many choices, and even if they are available, the price or options may not be right. This is just my take on why the Trail is a good variant, not a waste of money.

I did the math on the options and it made sense to me over an SR5 4x4 DCSB:


$3765 Trail Edition

• Bronze Wheels - would have wanted to upgrade anyways, would have cost $1000 to do myself
• Grille - would have missed out because don't want to risk modding a major safety component area ($200 I think aftermarket)
• Lift - Didn't want to do it, but probably would have been $500 let's say
• Blackout Badging (let's say $30 off Amazon)
• A/T tires - would have cost me nearly $1000 to get these mounted and installed
• Floor Liners - $200
• Locker - I don't know but it's worth a lot and never would do an aftermarket one for my purposes ($750?)
• Bed Storage - not everyone's cup of tea but I bet they're $750 msrp at least
• 120V Outlet - let's say $300
• Skid Plate - $200

So you can quickly see how this package makes sense for a lot of us with different priorities. That's nearly $5k, and you have to do it all yourself and risk problems and no warranty support. Again, I've been there, done stuff. It's not everyone's desire or goal.

 

No pics for anyone to post yet, I believe no one has received one yet. Earliest I heard was a guy who has an early January build date.

 

Yep it's my bad, if you see above I noticed that and then linked the main thread. I searched almost that exact phrasing and nothing popped up for me. I get the built-in search isn't Google but I was surprised to not find one. I only stumbled on the main one via scrolling the main page and happening upon it. Thanks for pointing people to it, trying to point the guys I picked up on this thread over there.

 

I think this trim is a great bridge between SR5 and OR. What would make the Trail Edition almost irresistible is an option for LED headlights and fog lights.

As an OR owner with the MGM color, I seriously wouldn't mind those Trail Edition wheels either...

 

The search feature on the page isn't the most user-friendly to be sure! Guess your linking the two is why they were adjacent when I happened to look (w/o searching).

 

I totally agree, although the intresting thing here is that if you compare DCSB 4x4 Trail vs DCSB TRDOR, both with nothing on them, just like that (which they never are but for the purposes of my comparison), the TRDOR comes out to 38,925, while the Trail comes out to 40,690.

So it's less an in-between option, and can sometimes be more expensive, it's just a different route at the price point. Depends on what you value. However, I think most Trails end up being cheaper - most TRDOR have the LEDs, Tech package, other accessories, and can of course be Premium package.

I agree, if I could add the $485 headlights, or even pay more for them on the Trail, it would be perfect for me. And I assume that's why they didn't allow it, because even though it's probably a smaller run of these Trails, it would really make the TRDOR look bad...I'd assume

 

Are the emblems black? Or are they just using the black overlays? It would be cool if Toyota finally made black emblems for the 3rd gen, like they did for the 2nd gen.

 

I believe, just as all 3rd gen Tacomas are, that the Black emblems are actually overlays. In my region it's called the "Blackout Package". I agree, why not use real emblems? I guess cost.

However the bronze TOYOTA in the grille is real, as is the TRAIL badge on back.

 

I would assume they're overlays as well. Funny though, because the 4x4 emblem comes in black on the Pro... so that one could potentially be a real black emblem, if Toyota chose to use it.

 

I know the Blackout package uses overlays, and I believe it's easy to tell if you get up close because there is no paint showing in the opening in each "4", if you know what I mean. Like, the overlay is still black there, covering the paint. A real badge would not look like that.

Morning update: my sales rep told me a build date of 1-19, not sure how he arrived at that.

Tried my VIN in the input link this morning and instead of pulling up my build sheet as it’s done all weekend, I got a “input real VIN” error. So it must be being built!

Anyone have clarity into the dealer process? Should they automatically receive a VIN in their system now? Does it take a few days? Etc.

 

Once my temp vin stopped working I checked my dealers website the next day and found “my” truck with the real vin. I then used that in the vin lookup tool, and saw it was a “real truck”. A few days later the dealer website updated the “vehicle in transit” with dates.

EDIT: yesterday, the delivery window said 1/28 - 2/2 and today it updated to 1/24 - 1/28. May have it sooner than I thought just yesterday!

 

Awesome! Mine is ahead of schedule as well. Original build date of 1-19, it actually ended up being built today and assigned a permanent VIN. I’m actually logged into the Toyota app with the real VIN already - I saw on another forum you can actually see when they get air in the tires, put miles on it, fill the tank etc. through connected services. Hoping for a late January delivery based on what I’m seeing!

No problem! Let me know if it actually works like tire pressure etc. because you’re a bit farther along with a build date of 1-6. Keep us updated as you hear it’s shipped to port, in transit etc. because you’re an earlier build. Is yours really Lunar? Some people have said they thought they weren’t building Lunars yet but I’m glad to hear that’s not the case.
